A Tribute To Michelle's "Kitty" Who Live At The Bridge

Farewell to a feline friend

By MICHELLE FERRIER
CHASING RAINBOWS

Last update: December 20, 2005

Even after 18 years, I underestimate how much she is a part of my life, my family's life. Each week, as I type my columns for the newspaper, Kitty is under my feet and on most days her beautiful grey-and-white, tiger-striped fur manages to avoid the rollers on my office chair.

Kitty ingratiates herself into my most intimate spaces. At night, she can be found under my bed, her soft snoring lulling me to sleep. In the mornings, she perches outside the shower, daring me to drip water from my feet on her as I try to find a place on the bath mat. She sits at my feet, faithful even with the business at hand.

She came to us accidentally, finding her way as a small kitten onto the deck of our city townhouse. As professed dog lovers, we took her in only long enough to find her a home elsewhere. A committee of three came up with the creative name of Kitty, Ms. Kitty for her more formal papers. The name stuck, and so didKitty -- for 18 years.

It's been a week since Kitty passed away late at night, as my husband and I talked about how much she had been resting lately. I picked her up to feel her skin and body for any bumps, signs of pain. She tolerated my probings, wriggled herself away just a few feet, then lay down again behind a chair. We heard a bump. Kitty had tried to rise, fell against our bedroom doorway, and lay there.

I was petting her and softly calling her name as she took her last breaths. I realized the pounding I felt wasn't her heartbeat, but my own heart now in my hands. I lifted them to see that the soft rise and fall of her fur had stopped. Then, the tears began to fall in earnest, wetting her fur as I realized Kitty was gone.

I cried most of the night, as I lined a plastic storage bin with soft fake fur from our Christmas village display and some scraps of fabric from the children as her final resting place. I wanted the kids to see her nestled lovingly among fabrics that had been important in their lives. My body heaved for hours as I tried to think about our family life without Kitty.

Kitty had been to the vet a couple of times this past year, giving us quite a scare each time. I had taken those opportunities to talk to my kids about a time when Kitty would be gone. We discussed burial versus cremation and other funeral plans. Even though it was difficult at the time, I explained that it was important to talk about these things instead of trying to make decisions in the midst of our grief later on.

I was so grateful, as I lay in bed that night, for those conversations. I think it eased a little of the shock and mystery of the events of this past week and allowed each of us to say goodbye without having to think about what would happen next.

My son talked to Kitty the next day, stroking her still form, sharing his grief.

"Kitty, you taught me about love, and death, and about not taking people and those around you for granted," he said through his tears. "You gave me such a gift. You are continuing to teach me, even now."

Every day, we are reminded of the spaces that Kitty filled with unconditional love -- constantly, faithfully, unwaveringly. Now, they are big gaping holes that we pray time will heal. Goodbye, goodbye, my sister, my confidante, my friend.

Memorial To Clyders -For Mary

1996 to December 17, 2005

Clyde joined his friends and cagemates at the bridge this morning at 5:10AM PT. He was a very sweet 9 year old sable male who has joined his friends Bear, Boozer, Sage, Stinky, Tweaky and the ferret love of his life Missy Bon who went to the bridge on May 13, 2005.

Clyde loved all his treats and loved to snuggle with his many friends in anything soft. He was such a sweet little guy, he was loved by many and will be greatly missed as he starts his journey at the bridge.   He went to the bridge quietly in his human daddy's arms. He was suffering from CHF, fluid on his left lung, a prolapsed rectum, and a heart murmur.

Go with God our little Love, thank you for blessing our lives for almost five years. We will surely miss the OG's of the OC. Give Missy Bon a kiss from us and tell all our babies we love them and miss them something terrible.

Love You Always, Mommy and Daddy

I wouldn't think anything could live thru this...

but this kind lady did...

Rolling Dog Ranch- Sanctuary For Handicapped Animals

It takes a special hand and heart to care for a pet that is handicapped. A dear friend shared this website with me and I wanted to include it in this journal, to give them the credit and visibility that they deserve for the excellent work they are doing for these special fur babies.

It is certainly one of the most incredible Animal Sanctuaries that I have seen. Please feel free to share it with your friends, and explore their site in depth. Your heart will be warmed as you read about them and see the valuable contribution they are making to the animals that need their care.

They are doing such important work!

In Memory Of Kitty: For DragonRose3911

Born: July 29th 1985

Died: July 31st, 2004

To Kitty,

I was born the day you were. You were my angel. It was a miracle we found each other. Ever since then you were with me. Through my terrible twos, on to my teenage years, and up until college you were there. You slept beside me every night, curled up like you always were underneath the covers as your head rested on my arm. You truly were my angel. We had a wonderful 19 years together. I always thought we would have been together forever, since we were together at birth. But God decided to take you home. You needed the rest, the vacation. So Ill go on, although its hard, and Ill meet you by that rainbow bridge one day. I miss you. I love you.

Love Always

Your sister,
Felicia

"Waterfalls of Life" Thank you Terry

Place:Krimml, Austria Observer:Till Credner

Dreams of a waterfall like images in life you do see,

The power of flowing water like your love should be.

Reflections of sunlight with rainbows of love from the start,

With mist from the water brings freshness to your heart.

From the edges of rocks that changes directions of flow,

Like pathways of life with changes of love that you know.

The pressure of water as it hits the bottom below,

Is like the pressure of sadness in your heart as you go.

The calmness of water as it leaves the falls you do see,

Like the calmness of love in life that will be.

A Heartfelt Poem. Thank You Donna~

HOW COULD YOU

by Jim Willis

When I was a puppy I entertained you with my antics and made you laugh.
You called me your child and despite a number of chewed shoes
and a couple of murdered throw pillows, I became your best friend.

Whenever I was “bad,” You’d shake your finger at me
and ask “How could you?” – but then you’d relent and roll me over for a belly rub.

My house training took a little longer than expected, because you were
terribly busy, but we worked on that together. I remember those nights
of nuzzling you in bed,
listening to your confidences and secret dreams,
and I believed that life could not be any more perfect.

We went for long walks and runs in the park, car rides,
stops for ice cream (I only got the cone because “ice cream is bad for dogs,”
you said), and I took long naps in the sun waiting for you to come home
at the end of the day.

Gradually, you began spending more time at work and on your career,
and more time searching for a human mate.
I waited for you patiently, comforted you through heartbreaks
and disappointments,
never chided you about bad decisions, and romped with glee
at your homecomings, and when you fell in love.

She, now your wife, is not a “dog person” – still I welcomed her into our home,
tried toshow her affection, and obeyed her.
I was happy because you were happy.
Then the human babies came along and I shared your excitement.
I was fascinated by their pinkness, how they smelled,
and I wanted to mother them, too. Only she and you worried
that I might hurt them, and I spent most of my time
banished to another room, or to a dog crate.

Oh, how I wanted to love them, but I became a “prisoner of love.”
As they began to grow, I became their friend.
They clung to my fur and pulled themselves up on wobbly legs,
poked fingers in my eyes, investigated my ears
and gave me kisses on my nose.
I loved everything about them and their touch –
because your touch was nowso infrequent –
and I would have defended them with my life if need be.

I would sneak into their beds and listen to their worries and secret dreams.
Together we waited for the sound of your car in the driveway.
There had been a time, when others asked you if you had a dog,
that you produced a photo of me from your wallet and told them stories about me.
These past few years, you just answered “yes” and changed the subject.
I had gone from being “your dog” to “just a dog,”
and you resented every expenditure on my behalf.

Now you have a new career opportunity in another city, and you and they will be moving
to an apartment that does not allow pets.
You’ve made the right decision for your “family,”
but there was a time when I was your only family.

I was excited about the car ride until we arrived at the animal shelter.
It smelled of dogs and cats, of fear, of hopelessness.
You filled out the paperwork and said “I know you will find a good home for her.”
They shrugged and gave you a pained look. They understand the realities
facing a middle-aged dog or cat, even one with “papers.”

You had to pry your son’s fingers loose from my collar as he screamed,
“No, Daddy! Please don’t let them take my dog!”
And I worried for him, and what lessons you had just taught him about friendship
and loyalty, about love and responsibility, and about respect for all life.
You gave me a goodbye pat on the head, avoided my eyes, and politely refused to take my collar and leash with you.
You had a deadline to meet and now I have one, too.

After you left, the two nice ladies said you probably knew about your upcoming move
months ago and made no attempt to find me another good home.
They shook their heads and asked “How could you?”

They are as attentive to us here in the shelter as their busy schedules allow.
They feed us,of course, but I lost my appetite days ago.
At first, whenever anyone passed my pen, I rushed to the front, hoping it was you –
that you had changed your mind – that this was all a bad dream...
or I hoped it would at least be someone who cared, anyone who might save me.
When I realized I could not compete with the frolicking for attention
of happy puppies, oblivious to their own fate,I retreated to a far corner and waited.

I heard her footsteps as she came for me at the end of the day
and I padded along the aisle after her to a separate room. A blissfully quiet room.
She placed me on the table, rubbed my ears and told me not to worry.
My heart pounded in anticipation of what was to come,
but there was also a sense of relief. The prisoner of love had run out of days.

As is my nature, I was more concerned about her.
The burden which she bears weighs heavily on her and I know that, the same way I knew your every mood.

She gently placed a tourniquet around my foreleg as a tear ran down her cheek.
I licked her hand in the same way I used to comfort you so many years ago.
She expertly slid the hypodermic needle into my vein. As I felt the sting
and the cool liquid coursing through my body, I lay down sleepily,
looked into her kind eyes and murmured “How could you?”

Perhaps because she understood my dogspeak, she said “I’m so sorry.”
She hugged me and hurriedly explained it was her job to make sure I went to a better place, where I wouldn’t be ignored or abused or abandoned,
or have to fend for myself – a place of love and light so very different from this earthly place.

With my last bit of energy, I tried to convey to her with a thump of my tail
that my “How could you?” was not meant for her.

It was you, My Beloved Master, I was thinking of.
I will think of you and wait for you forever.
May everyone in your life continue to show you so much loyalty.

The End

Journal of HOPE and Great love- for Fluffy!

Let me share a fantastic story of love and courage! My friend Laurentha adopted a handicapped kitten several months ago. She was named "Fluffy" and she has been developing  and growing into quite the "young lady" thanks to her purrsonal "slave" Laurentha.

Laurentha created a journal about Fluffy, which is a diary of Laurentha's experiences and progress with this amazing kitty. It is a fascinating read for all pet lovers, particularly those who have handicapped cats. It is an inspiration and a source of support for folks who have cats with special needs. My kudos go out to Laurentha for creating this journal!

Apaws to her and to the love and devotion that she showers on this wonderful cat.

Here is the link to the journal and a recent picture of Fluffy!

"Premarin Mares and Foals" Need Your Help!

Winter is fast approaching in Canada. The leaves are changing, there is a chill in the air, and it recently snowed in Alberta. Sadly, this signals the end of this year’s rescue opportunity for Premarin mares and foals, and the ranchers will be forced to bring the horses out of pasture.

Since it is extremely costly for the ranchers to feed these animals, nearly 200 horses will end up at auction, many of whom will be slaughtered. If you have room to house a horse, please consider adopting a Premarin mare or foal today. For more information on how you can help, please
visit ASPCA.org today.

A Tribute of Love For Rufus and Denise, her companion..eternally!

A Tribute To Rufus, For Denise

Beloved Rufus now resides at the Rainbow Bridge. He is missed so by his  wonderful companion, Denise, and is once again, happy and healthy, romping and playing with his new friends. He waits for his beloved companion to join him in her own time. He does not want her to be sad now.

I would like to share Denise's words, so beautifully written for the Candlelight Ceremony:

Born February 11,1994 Passed On: October 6,2005

My " Little Mad Man"-how I miss you so-you gave me 11 1/2 years of unparalleled joy and laughter-God called you home all too soon-They must have needed a sentry at "The Pearly Gates" PLEASE wait for me at " The Bridge"-along with Tommy, Munchen, Brini,Herschel,Bumper and all the other wonderful pets

The Rescuer's Final Reward- Thank You Laurentha

Unlike most days at the Rainbow Bridge, this day dawned cold and gray.
All the recent arrivals at the Bridge did not know what to think, as
they had never seen such a day.  But the animals who had been waiting
longer for their beloved people to accompany them across the Bridge knew
what was happening, and they began to gather at the pathway leading to
the Bridge.

Soon an elderly dog came into view, head hung low and tail dragging. He
approached slowly, and though he showed no sign of injury or illness, he
was in great emotional pain.  Unlike the animals gathered along the
pathway, he had not been restored to youth and vigor upon arriving at
the Bridge.  He felt out of place, and wanted only to cross over and
find happiness.

But as he approached the Bridge, his way was barred by an angel, who
apologized and explained that the tired and broken-spirited old dog
could not cross over.  Only those animals accompanied by their people
were allowed to cross the Bridge.  Having nobody, and with nowhere else
to turn, the dog trudged into the field in front of the Bridge.

There he found others like himself, elderly or infirm, sad and
discouraged.  Unlike the other animals waiting to cross the Bridge,
these animals were not running or playing.  They simply were lying in
the grass, staring forlornly at the pathway across the Rainbow Bridge.
The old dog took his place among them, watching the pathway and waiting
yet not knowing for what he was waiting.

One of the newer dogs at the Bridge asked a cat who had been there
longer to explain what was happening.  The cat replied, "Those poor
animals were abandoned, turned away, or left at rescue places, but never
found a home on earth.  They all passed on with only the love of a
rescuer to comfort them.  Because they had no people to love them, they
have nobody to escort them across the Rainbow Bridge."

The dog asked the cat, "So what will happen to those animals?"  Before
the cat could answer, the clouds began to part and the cold turned to
bright sunshine.  The cat replied, "Watch, and you will see."

In the distance was a single person, and as he approached the Bridge the
old, infirm and sad animals in the field were bathed in a golden light.
They were at once made young and healthy, and stood to see what their
fate would be.  The animals who had previously gathered at the pathway
bowed their heads as the person approached.  At each bowed head, the
person offered a scratch or hug.  One by one, the now youthful and
healthy animals from the field fell into line behind the person.
Together, they walked across the Rainbow Bridge to a future of happiness
and unquestioned love.

The dog asked the cat, "What just happened?"

The cat responded, "That was a rescuer.  The animals gathered along the
pathway bowing in respect were those who had found their forever homes
because of rescuers.  They will cross over when their people arrive at
the Bridge.  The arrival here of a rescuer is a great and solemn event,
and as a tribute they are permitted to perform one final act of rescue.
They are allowed to escort all those poor animals they couldn't place on
earth across the Rainbow Bridge."

The dog thought for a moment, then said, "I like rescuers."  The cat
smiled and replied, "So does heaven, my friend.  So does heaven."

Prayers Needed for Sweet Kitty Tara!

I am sending this request for prayers and glow for my sweet Tara; she has chronic upper respiratory problems, and has been treated for over a month this time around at home, to no avail.  She spent Saturday until this morning in hospital.  Dr. says she had an abscessed tooth that he extracted when he cleaned her teeth (at my request) and that the poison had impacted her kidneys, though not terribly.

She needs "major surgery" as he puts it, on her sinuses; but she cannot have it until her infection is cleared.  More antibiotics, of course.  What I wanted to post was that, and to ask that anyone who feels so inclined would pray and/or send healing positive thoughts her way?  Anyone who meets my Tara has to love her; she is the sweetest, and cutest little kitten-flower!  (Technically she is a middle-aged cat; but she'll always be a kitten to me!)

THANKS for anything you can do...

Muhjacat

And a little gift from Muhjacat about how Pussy Willows got their name....

Darling Tara passed gently over the Rainbow Bridge between October 17th and 18th during the night. Such a young cat, only seven and a half years old. We grieve with her mom.

Sleep sweetly little Tara, and play with your new friends at the Rainbow Bridge. You are healthy and out of pain now. While your mom misses you dreadfully, know that her tears are liquid love which nurtures her soul and spirit.

Tribute to Zazz For Sue (Zazzpurrs)

Late August 2003 I went to my classroom to find one of my students sitting on the floor outside my door. In his cap was a little gray/blue kitten not old enough to be away from his mommy.  Brian had seen movement in the road as he drove to school and stopped his car.   He found this one little kitten that had survived... there was a bag with 3 other dead kittens in it.

Since I had taught Brian when he was 6  & 7years old and had had him again in 9th, 10th and then in 11th grade... he knew I loved animals, especially cats.He just lifted him up to me and told me with tears that he hoped I could help it.Needless to say, the past 13 years that cat, named Zazzoom by my class of gifted students, has been a part of my life.

The first few weeks he was with me all the time, being fed and nurtured until he could deal with things on his own. That first day the vet and I guessed he was maybe 3 weeks old at the time.

He grew into a really large cat -- standing on his hind legs his head would easily touch the door knob.  He was a muscular 20 lbs at his top form. The last few years he was more like 15 lbs.

Zazz loved it when I got my first external modem ....he would come find it and lie down near it and purr (thus my screen name). The sound was just somehow pleasing to him.

Zazz didn't care much about being around people unless I was around. The folks at the vets office knew this well... and would post a sign and make a game of it when he had to stay with them any length of time. (I did my best to make sure that didn't happen often).

I was burglarized when he was about 4 years old; the burglar apparantly woke him up, for when I arrived home, there was one closet door closed -- in the bedroom-- and Zazz was behind it.   The other cats were in hiding, but could move about as the idiot had left all doors and cabinets wide open.  They came out when they heard my voice. I knew at once that Zazz had to have attacked him!  When police called me 4days later, you know I asked if the idiot had scratches on him. HE DID!!   Good boy Zazz!

My darling brother who served 2 tours in Vietnam said he never thought anything would scare him again until he realized that Zazz didn't like people unless I was around. tee hee,  I didn't have to worry about anything with my darling attack cat!!

In the last year I had noticed arthritis had set in... his jumps were taking more concentration and sometimes he chose to do in 2  what he used to do in one.

He is at the Bridge now with Sparkle and Sherlock and Shenandoah, all who took him into our house and taught him all the cat games. He is missed greatly by Esme and Rocky and his human, Sue.

URGENT: LA Shelter Closed :TAKE ACTION

URGENT: LA shelter is closed, 1000 calls to White House needed!

URGENT: LA shelter is closed.. Need to take action..read below

CROSSPOST WIDELY AND INTERNATIONALLY!!

The Louisiana state vet is NOT allowing any animals to leave the state for the 15 DAY quarantine!!
They have also closed the main facilities to any more animals being brought in. there are over 2000 animals in there!! NO MORE IN, NO MORE OUT.  Rescue groups have animals loaded on trucks and vans and ARMED GUARDS wont let them bring them to the shelters, and then to pick-up others to bring home. . read below and take action on monday for 1000 calls to the White House.

Interviewed today by Chicago Tribune on This!!!
! 1000 CALLS TO THE WHITE HOUSE, MONDAY 9/12 Comments: 202-456-1111 Switchboard: 202-456-1414 FAX: 202-456-2461 Write to the White House as well: comments@whitehouse.gov

We were  told by someone in Homeland Security yesterday, that believe it or not, the way to get this solved is to have 1000 people call the White House to demand that the military go in and save these animals. Now that they have evacuated so many humans, its TIME, NOW, to save their best friends. The death toll of humans is much lower than expected, but not evacuating the pets has made the animal death toll unimaginable. AMERICA DOES NOT ABANDON IT'S PETS WHILE WATCHING THEM SUFFER A SLOW AND PAINFUL DEATH. This is cruelty to animals, which humans caused by leaving them, then not rescuing them, NOW HUMANS MUST SAVE THEM. FLOODING THE WHITE HOUSE WITH CALLS ON MONDAY WILL GUARANTEE a call from the White House to the field to save the animals. SPREAD THE WORD and thank you for standing up for the animals. You have saved many so far, and, many to come!

Please write to:CassM07@aol.com  for suggestions on how to get this out on forums and chat rooms, today, tomorrow and until every pet comes home.

Thank you!

A Beautiful Rescue Poem!

This poem was sent to me by Laurentha. I dedicate this poem to all the people who rescue animals, especially those animals who have special needs and who require a lot of devoted assistance.. This poem also is dedicated  to Fluffy- a wonderful kitty who was paralyzed as a little baby. She has no sensation in her hind end, but nonetheless is a little "terror" and a ball of love.

God sends some of us a special mission
To take in stray kitty-cats in any condition,
To feed them and give them a permanent home,
To love them and make them our very own.

They chase through the house; their potty box smells;
They seem to have secrets they're unwilling to tell.
They play till exhausted, then curl in your lap,
And settle themselves for a long comfy nap.

Some people are called to great wealth and power,
To run corporations, make big bucks per hour,
But others of us are only asked,
To take in little stray kitty-cats.

I asked God for things of importance to do,
Other than loving a good man and a bunch of kitties too.
He said,"Don't be self-righteous; learn from your mistakes,
And be glad I send kitty-cats and not my stray snakes."

I dreamed when I died I heard St. Peter say,
"What important things did you do each day?"
I felt Heaven for me was an impossibility
And that I should have lived my life much differently.

Then God said, "Come in. Have food and some drink,
And sit here in Heaven by your little cat Tink;
For I gave you one of My most important tasks
When I asked you to be a taker-in of stray kitty-cats."

In Memory Of Tilly- A Beloved Shih! Glow To Kplw2

2005 My Tilly, my little mama Shih, my little buddy and companion for 9 years, died unexpectedly  June 16 2005.  My grief has been deep and inconsolable, I miss her so.

A month or two after Tilly died my husband and I were sitting in the backyard, near where we had buried her.  Out of nowhere came a butterfly....a ragged winged little thing who, after circling me, landed on my knee.

Needless to say we were enthralled as this tiny creature flew off and returned over and over again.  And then she landed in my hair. She seemed quite satisfied to sit there but I wanted to see her.  When my husband moved she flew off, startled as he went for a camera.

I waited, seated, patiently .....I waited quietly hardly breathing.  Pretty soon the little thing flutterflew down and landed on my knee again.  We studied each other.  I knew this little old soul.  Have you ever looked into a Butterflies eyes?  All of them?  They are like a wonderful kaleidoscope of wonder, and in them, the world is mirrored.

Again she left and returned. And again, and again.  In my hair, on my knee, on my arm.  She studied me so intently.  She went to hubby too but returned to me...mutual fascination..  I was beginning to know these eyes.  I have been looking into them for 9 years, such a short time.  It was Tilly.  It was.  There was no doubt.  She flew off again and again returning to my hair and knee.

I finally offered my finger and she came aboard and as I drew her up to MY eye she gave but a little flutter of her tattered wings.  She seemed to say....I swear I heard it....'I've flown a long way and you should know......'

And suddenly I knew, she had flown and flown hard, all the way down from heaven to say, 'I love you Mom, don't cry.'  It was Tilly.  'And I love you too I whispered as we sat there. Reluctantly we parted...but did...

A very touching story.. from Amy

This story came to me from my friend Amy. She was sending her beloved Lobo to the bridge, and was in her vet's office. This story moved me so much, I just had to share it, and with Amy's permission.. here it is.   <<Dear Friends:

As you all know it was a heart breaking day for us. Our vet agreed that it would be best to put Lobo down, She said pain meds would help for a short time but I would be bringing him back in 2 - 6 months for the eventual results. She also said with the great increase in the amount of water he was drinking ( like 2 quarts at one time) it was possible his kidneys were shutting down also. Lobo was 9 years old and had a good life once he was rescued from his drug house beginnings.

While I was talking to her she said she had three others to put down today also. A 15 year old retired seeing eye dog, a 200 pound Dane with heart and liver problems and a guinea pig that had cancer belonging to the 5 year old girl in the waiting room. It was going to be a hard day for her also.

When I was finished I went out to the waiting room and there was this little girl sobbing her heart out at the loss of her pet. I walked over to her and asked her to come to me. I sat down and I put my arm around her and explained that the large dog she saw me bring in was making the same trip as her pet. (Mom and vet told her guinea pig was going to the farm). I asked her if it would be all right if he (Lobo) went with her guinea pig to protect her and show it where to go. She said yes, and hugged me. Of course you know my heart broke at that point. I had to get up and leave and as I did mom and the vet thanked me for talking to her.

Like I said maybe it helped her pain a little. I know it took some of the sting out of my losing Lobo. Oh and I should mention that hubby ( who never gets emotional about animals) sat and cried in the car when I came out alone. Of course he wouldn't allow me to hug him and console him. I explained what the vet said and he just shook his head in agreement. Tears ran down his face for about the first five minutes of the drive home. By then he managed to compose himself like nothing happened.

     So I am now home with a massive headache which I am praying will go away by tomorrow. Thanks for all your kind words and thoughts, cause it helped me make the right decision. You all are wonderful people. Love you all!!!   {{{}}}

Based in North Carolina: Project HALO is in the process of coordinating a trip to the flood ravaged areas of MS, AL and LA to help rescue the displaced and injured animals. We did this when Floyd hit our coast and we're being called upon again. I just spoke with the NC Director of EARS (Emergency Animal Rescue Services) and she expects us to be deployed Wednesday (9/7). I expected to be able to leave earlier but right now I understand they're focusing on human rescue and as we all know the animal's needs will be the last to be addressed.
•Following is a list of items I've been told are needed:
Advantage/Frontline/Heartgard, Plastic pet carriers, Leashes/collars, Food/water bowls, Zip ties, Litter/Litter boxes/Scoops, Duct Tape, Wet Ones/Handiwipes, Paper Towels, Plastic Trash Bags, Tarps, Plastic or Rubber Gloves, Sharpie Pens, Bug Spray for the volunteers, Polaroid Film, Polaroid Cameras, Any type of wound dressing material (gauze, tape, wound wash, etc),
•If any of you have a good relationship with your vet, see if they will donate some medical supplies.
• We need everything to set up a triage area for the injured.
• We've also been made aware of the need for small animal rescue such as guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits and ferrets. They need bedding (no cedar), breed specific food, water bottles, heavy-medium size food bowls and BAGGED timothy or alfalfa hay.

Please cross post and pass this urgent message on to as many people as
you can as time is of the essence.

I also spoke to Danine who is the Shelter Manager with the Humane
Society of Monroe (http://bayoupets.org/), Louisiana that is about 4 hours away from New
Orleans, who said that their shelter has been inundated with many animals that were dropped off by pet owners because of the evacuation and are now being cared for along with many other animals that have
been rescued and brought in on a daily basis and are in need of food and supplies.  We have contacted our friends at The Meow Mix Company who have offered to help with food and  will  have several pallets of food delivered to their shelter within the next  few days. We are coordinating to have  more food delivered  to help other shelters in other disaster areas.
We are asking any shelters that are taking in Hurricane animals in need of food or assistance to contact Pets & Animals in Distress at contact@petsandanimals.org

Working with Louisiana State University: Items and money can be sent to Yvette LeBlanc, 30200 Barnette Rd, Denhem Springs, LA 70726 (please put in the memo area of your check Katrina Animal Emergency Fund), or call Yvette on her cell: 225-964-2764 or at her grooming shop: 225-667-2667, and see where your help is needed.  Everything is tax deductible and receipts will be sent back to all who donate.

What is being seen on the news Yvette said isn't even touching justhow serious things are down there. 100's and even 1000's of animals are homeless with no feed, water, or medical attention. People are standing on the streets trying to give their animals away due to no place to go with them or money to care for them.

People can also purchase items online through PetSmart, Petco, Wal-Mart, and other pet supply companies and have them ship directly to LSU or Yvette.

Things are in a desperate situation now and any kind of help is needed ASAP.

Thank you for your response to our email.  THERE IS NO NEED TO CALL US.  Please submit the following information; Your name, telephone number, your city, your state and a veterinarian reference.  We are compiling a master list so we can start placing animals from a shelter in Jackson.  Right now there are  240 dogs, and 100 cats that need GOOD HOMES. As you can imagine, there are going to be many more.
If you cant adopt, and would like to help out with a monetary donation, you can
do so by sending a check or money order directly to the shelter in Jackson or calling
the animal disaster relief hotline.  Here is that information:

OK, now to give you all some information as to what is what. Understandably so,its people first down there. Now, about our furry loved ones in MS.  The animals we are dealing with are Owner Turn- Overs. These pets have been turned over to the shelter by their owners and need good homes.  We are working with a transport company that is currently down in MS trying to get our fist load of dogs. There are groups of animal disaster relief workers down in the disaster area, who are doing everything they can to get these animals processed.

There is a NASTY RUMOR, going around that people are shooting animals. This is not accurate. There have been some severely injured animals that have had to be humanely euthanized, however the first priority of these trained rescue folks is to help and save these animals. They are doing a superb job. Kudos and blessings go out to them.

There are still some areas that these folks have not been able to reach due to the human rescue effort. Triage for the animals is set up and they are working non-stop. Please keep these folks in your prayers.

Jackson has stationing areas in place. PLEASE DO NOT GO DOWN TO MISSISSIPPI. Let the Pros do their jobs.

As soon as possible, all animals that come through the shelters who have been rescued, will be placed on a "match list". There is a detailed list that is being used. Priority is to attempt to reunite pet with their human companions. There is a list of perspective fosters and adopters ( who will be screened to assure they have the proper facility to take in lost pets) If you are chosen, you will then receive a call from the transporter and can discuss with her at that time where in your state she will be bringing the animals.
This is all done with volunteers, so go easy on us please.Lynda and her mom are doing their very best!

Thank you for your support, and God Bless you.

Please Help Homeless Pets Due To Katrina

Noah's Wish Rescue Organization:

This group is doing a fantastic job to help the animals impacted by Katrina. Here is the link to their site. If you can, please make a donation or check out what you can do to help them in their incredible work.

They are taking donations of money, supplies and other items that they need so desperately. There is a list of items that they need on their website. They are not stockpiling food, and request that they be contacted prior to making any item donations.

They also are open to folks who can actually go there and help them out also. Please take the time to explore their website at this very, very difficult time for man and the animals who are also suffering so badly.

They are also rescuing and holding animals they find to hopefully reunite them with their people as well as the countless ferals and strays that lived in the area.

Thank you for all that you can do for our needy animals!

In Memory Of Harry Monster

Harry Monster 1995- 08-17-2005   The beloved soul mate of Firewolf2317 and family. So loving a child of heaven who graced our lives for just a while. He is now healthy and romping in green pastures with all his cat friends. You are here in our hearts dear Harry and we know there is a new bright star in the heavens now watching over us. See you someday when we arrive at those gates too.

I AM EVERYWHERE

Listen can you hear me,
though I am gone away?
Watch and can you see me,
as you toil through your day?

Can you smell my presence,
or feel my tender touch,
the wonder of the life we shared,
the life you miss so much?

Please, hear the gentle tinkling,
of the wind chimes in the breeze,
of the soft wind a door's opening makes,
will put your heart at ease.

Watch the dancing flowers,
or autumn leaves skipping by,
they dance and skip like I did,
before I had to die.

The heady scent of catnip,
the fresh smell of summer sun,
the smell of leather harnesses,
remember our days of fun.

The caressing touch of butterflies,
the feel of blankets warm,
remember how we cuddled,
when ere there was a storm.

Although my body failed me,
my soul is  forever there.
Just look and touch and hear and feel,
for I am everywhere.

Dobie Rescue: Amazing!

He had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, while he continued to fight the fire.

She is pregnant.

The firefighter was afraid of her at first, because he had never been around a Doberman before.

When he finally got done putting the fire out, he sat down to catch his breath and rest.

A photographer from the Charlotte, North Carolina newspaper, "The Observer," noticed this red Doberman in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw her walking straight toward the fireman and wondered what she was going to do.

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had saved her life and the lives of her babies, and kissed him, just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

And people say animals are dumb....

Thanks to SHARONLEELMT for sending this incredible story!

The Rescuer's Final Reward

The Rescuer's Final Reward

"Special Letter From Heaven"

This is for all the Moms and Dads we have left behind.

We are all now safely over the Bridge and we all wanted to let you know that while we won't be with you in body, we will always be with you in Spirit.  We will think of you every day and one day we will see each other again.  We were met by so many others who came here before us - they were all waiting at the Bridge with their candles lit so we could see to cross.   We will also do the same as more pets come to the Bridge.  The Angels here are so friendly and we just love to watch them fly.  Most of us are trying to earn our 'Wings of Grace' before you get here.  Please try not to be too sad when you think of us, just be thankful for the time we had together.

In Memory Of Clifton: For Donna

Clifton was a special kitty I found on a run with my personal trainer on Labor Day, 1995.  I'd just separated from my husband of 28 years, on my way to divorce. :(.  I looked for a kitten, but none were to be found.  I'd moved in my new place with Dew and JJ, older kits, and Pirate, only 1.  I thought Pi needed a playmate.   No one had a kitten...

Then, I went running in downtown Cincinnati on Labor Day. As my trainer and I waited to cross a 5 lane highway, I heard him say "no kitty...no!" as Cliff tried to get to us.  Traffic cleared, and a kind gentleman on the corner kept Clift busy.  I picked him up... tiny kitty of grey and white.  (The grey turned out to be dirt...he was solid white.) Blistered feet, broken tail.   He purred.  I started running.  My trainer says "Where you goin' wiff dat cat?"  My reply?  "Home!"  Michael (on a bike) took the kitten from me.  Cliff licked sweat from his chest for the 2 miles plus home.  When when we got there, I took him back, and he slept on my lap for the 20 mile drive home.  He was dirty, flea bitten, and scared.

I took him to the vet, he checked out fine.  He was JUST what I needed.  Over the next 5 years, he turned into the smartest cat I have ever owned.  He turned my touchlamp ON when he wanted  fed. (On High...every time.)  He turned that same light OFF in this very room when I tried to read instead of pet him.  He learned to lean on the bathroom door and let it clang against the bookcase on weekends when he thought I'd slept too late.

He begged, and he waved... as you can see in the picture here.

Alas, one January,2000 morning, he came to the door to tell me goodbye.  Little did I know how seriously he meant it.  When I returned home around noon, I found Cliff dead in this very room.  I lost it...Totally lost it.  I knelt by his body, petting him.  I called my vet, my daughter my son in law.  It was January, no way could we bury him here...the ground was too frozen.

As I knelt beside him, the words "His job with you was done" kept going through my head..,, and I realized he was right.  I'd found Cliff when I was sure I couldn't survive on my own.  Cliff somehow made my days more liveable, and now I knew I would be okay.

He died on a Friday.  My son in law took his body to the vet's to await my 'final decisions.'

I cried the entire weekend.  On Monday, Wheezel sat on the end table where Cliffy did, at 3:30 AM, just like he did, threatening to turn on the light.  You need to know that she had never seen him do this!  I told her No Wheezy, NO!

She didn't.  Until that Wednesday.  Then, at 3:30 AM she turned on the light, and sat and stared deep  into my eyes before she leapt from the table.  I knew RIGHT THEN that Cliffy wasn't really gone.

The day he died, Wheez did three (count them... 3) tricks that no one but Cliff has ever done.  And she hasn't done them since.  I KNEW he was here with me.  To this day, when Wheezy turns on that light for me, I laugh in my sleep and say "Hi Cliffy Boy!"  He's NOT gone.  He's an angel baby that will be with me forever.

I Love you Cliffy!

A Remembrance For Angel Cat Hobbes

Tribute to Angel Hobbes: Written by Steve:
Hobbes: Feb. 1988 to July 25, 2005

Over and over, people had assured me that I would somehow magically know when "it was time". For weeks now, I worried that I would somehow be too oblivious to recognize the signal, or lack the courage to act if I didn't miss it. Late Sunday night, Hobbes' health started to nosedive. It had done this before, but this time felt different. I can't say why, but somehow, I knew in my heart he wouldn't be pulling out of it this time. So, the time had come, I knew it, and I couldn't avoid it.

I spent much of the wee hours of the morning laying beside Hobbes on the bed, petting him and telling him how much I loved him. At 10am I spoke with the vet and got an appointment to euthanize Hobbes for 3pm. My friend and neighbor, Denise, was standing ready to help me summon the strength I needed to get through it - little did either of us realize how soon I was going to need that help - Thank you SO MUCH for being there, Denise.

And then, as I lay alongside Hobbes knowing that our time together (on earth at least) was quickly coming to an end, wanting it to be as loving and special as I could make it, having finally prepared myself to deal with ending his life, he died peacefully in my arms - just an hour before the appointment I had scheduled with the vet. Needless to say, I'm so numb and tired from the emotional voyage that this experience sent me on that I can't even begin to describe what I am feeling. I'm not sure I even know what I am feeling right now, except it really really hurts. But I am thankful for one thing - I will at least be spared the inevitable guilt trip that surely would have accompanied my having to have made the decision to end his life.

I want to thank all of you for the help and offers of help, notes of concern, supportive phone calls, IM's and e-mails and caring thoughts you sent my way. You are part of the reason that I have faith I will make it through the grief and anguish, someday to smile again.

"The Dance"

                       Beloved Angel Iniki- DBDustbuny

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above.
For a moment all the world was right.
How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go .
Our lives are better left to chance. I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance.

Holding you I held everything.
For a moment wasn't I the king.
But if I'd only known how the king would fall.
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end, the way it all would go.
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance.
Yes my life is better left to chance,
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance.

In Memory Of Genie- For Terry

" GENIE - My Best Friend!"

I can hardly believe it's been a whole year since you crossed the bridge. It seems like only yesterday you were at the kennel and we could be with each other every day since I couldn't have you at home - that's the only reason I was there 7 days a week was because of you. Remember our 'naps' we'd take almost every day after I got permission from the kennel owner to put you in that huge crate which was big enough for both of us! I'd set my phone alarm so I'd wake up in time to let the other dogs out but we always had our time together didn't we!

Now Jasmine has crossed too Genie - exactly one year from when you left - I asked God to let you and Baloo come bring her home and I had this sense of peace that you were there when she left. I put your collar on her, didn't think you'd mind. I only had her for a year and although she wasn't you she did seem to understand the pain I was going thru and she also had that same crate and would sleep with me during our spare time. I have your ashes in my bedroom and that's where Jasmine's will be. Also I know you are both running free and are healthy again. And for my sweet Jasmine:

"First Day In Heaven"

Is Heaven all you asked of it,
O little cat? Did Peter fit
A halo for your graceless head?
Is there a quilt for your special bed,
And a bowl of cream just out of reach
Of your thieving paw? Or do They teach
You not to steal in Paradise?
Does the flapping of Their wings entice?
Do you scamper and swing on a golden fence,
Or are They teaching you reverence?
And are there really golden thrones
Up there? Or do the Mighty Ones
Have nice fat chairs that you can claw
And tear and snag with an impious paw?
And do the angels understand
That a little cat in a lonely land
Still longs for a kiss and a friendly cuff?

Celestial joys are not enough.
Please, some small saint in shining white,
Hold him close in your arms tonight.

On Grief

GRIEF
Any time there is a loss, companion animals may suffer from grief in the same manner that we do.  This is especially true with the death of a family member, whether human or nonhuman.  It may also occur when a member of the family leaves the household.  This could be from a difficult situation suich as divorce, but it  may also occur when a child leaves for college or to begin life on her own.  The most important homeopathic remedy for immediate effects of grief is Ignatia.  This remedy can be very helpful to individuals in grief.  It will not block the experience of grief, but it can lighten the load somewhat and allow the individual (two- or four-legged) to accept and integrate the changes in his life.  Ignatia can even help in some case when the gief is in the past, but the person has  not finished letting go.  There are other remedies for illness that results from unresolved grief, including Natrum muriaticum and Phosphoric acid, but this state is usually a chronic condition that warrants expert homeopathic care.  Grief is often at the heart of a sudden occurrence of chronic disease.  I have seen this often in animals that develop diabetes, for example.

From Dian Stein's "Natural Remedy Book for Cats & Dogs" :

HOMEOPATHY:  Ignatia is the classic remedy for any dis-ease or behavior with grief as its basis, including hysteria and behavior aberrations.  For the pet who is so dejected she seems to drag her feet when she moves, the remedy is Calcera Carbonica.  Where there is severe depression and the animal seems to forget how to do things she has always done, try Calc Phos.  A melancholy, peevish animal may respond to Lycopodium; she is afraid to be alone and may have digestive or urinary symptoms.  Nux Vomica is for the irritable dog or cat who blames others and does not want to be touched.  With Arsenicum, there are periodic episodes of anger, panic or restlessness, and the animal feels cold to the touch.  For behavior problems that occur when the animal is left alone, especially in light colored clinging pets, try Pulsatilla.

FLOWER ESSENCES:  Star of Bethlehem with Honeysuckle helps pets who are grieving the permanent loss of a person or animal friend; Amaranthus is for the cat or dog grieving the loss of another pet.  Pear helps the animal who has lost her family and must adapt to a new one; Walnut aids adjustment to a new home or environment.  Where there are emotional and digestive symptoms from grief and loss, the essence to use is Wisteria.  The animal who blames a human for her loss responds to Eucalyptus, and Angelica is for extreme behavior changes from difficulty in adapting to a new family.  Clematis is for the lethargic dog or cat, Cucumber is for depression, and Bleeding Heart heals the heart and emotions.

GEMSTONES:  Pink stones, particularly Rose Quartz, are traditional for easing grief.  Place a piece in the pet's environment and on her collar, making sure to clear the stone frequently.  Jet and Onyx are traditionally stones of mourning and recovery from loss.  Kunzite or Lepidolite are mood-raisers and emotional balancers.  Make any of thes into gem elixirs.
