Tim Woolley Update 61 8/31 "ACN" YAY! Prayer Request For LITF!

Barbaro Updates: 61

Update 570: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (wednesday night). Michael Matz gave me the news as I was coming off the woodchip track on my first set. I was surprised to get the news so early so I hung around by the tunnel that goes under the dirt track so that MIchael could catch up and confirm that's what he had told me which he did. Just about to get on my second set which I presume will be Chappy who I think we are planning to breeze tomorrow.
updated thursday 6:40am

Note from OurBelovedAngels

I will be out of town today so will not be able to post any more updates today until, perhaps, late this evening. Please remember to pray especially hard for Fog today. Let's all pray that the medications have worked and that further treatment will be possible for this wonderfully courageous and beautiful horse.

A Prayer For Lost In The Fog- From The Barbaro Love Vigil Group

Photo: Barbara D. Livingston

Our prayers and our love pour out to this beautiful horse. Let us all hold in our hearts, with all the energy that we can share, that he will respond to treatment and be free of this dreaded illness.

We ask, dear God, that you place your healing hands upon Fog, and upon all the Veterinarians, and their staff that render treatment to him, to bless them and encourage them.

You are loved by so many... beautiful Fog.

A Beautifully Moving Video and Tribute:
LOST IN THE FOG
by:JFrank17

Each and every night at 7:00 PM ET our group meets to pray for Barbaro and Fog and other horses and those pets who are critically ill or injured. At one of our vigils recently, this was the prayer that was written by Fourhorsegal. I wanted to share it with those who are praying and for those who know that there are some powerful forces out here protecting those amazing animals. Please join us on AOL.  Barbaro Love Vigil

Dear Heavenly Father, we come to you with humble hearts tonight.

We ask that you continue to heal our Beloved Barbaro, and Lost In The Fog.

Lord, please protect those in the path of this hurricane.

Keep them safe, Lord.

We also ask your blessings for the families of the place crash victims.

We ask these things in your holy name. AMEN

Tim Woolley Update 59 "Barbaro doing OK"- Fog Update Too

Update 560: Just spoke to Kathy Anderson who visited Barbaro this afternoon. She reported Barbaro looked comfortable. Michael had also just left as Kathy was arriving

Note from OBA:

This is a sobering reminder not to let our guard down or take anything for granted in Barbaro's healing. Dr. Richardson did say that there will be ups and downs. Lets continue to pray with increased energy

Update 556: Spoke to Michael Matz this morning, he said that Dr. Richardson reported Barbaro had an ok night last night (monday night). I got the update from Michael as I was coming off the woodchip track from my second set. For my first set, I took a two-year-old to the woodchip track for his first time and he was leaping so high in the air he would have made a Lippanzaner jealous. Michael Matz viewed the performance and afterwards asked if I was ok and I said "as long as I have my neck strap, I'm fine!".

Update 555: I think we knew this, but a quick reminder Fog to have new exam on thursday of this week, excerpt:

Lost in the Fog will be examined Thursday by veterinarians from the University of California-Davis to determine if the three cancerous tumors discovered two weeks ago have shrunk. Lost in the Fog has been treated with the steroid dexamethasone since last week.

The article also notes that The Fog sometimes also goes to the track to watch other horses train! This florist has been mentioned on the discussion board as one that might be able to help those wishing to send good wishes. One of our readers discovered a nice note posted on another forum noting Vic Stauffer's (race caller) visit to Lost in the Fog: Lost in the Fog update.

Tim Woolley Update 58 8/28 AM "ACN"

Barbaro Updates:

553: Just spoke to Peter Brette, and while he was unable to visit Barbaro today he had heard from Michael who had visited, and all remains well. He also noted that Round Pond appeared to come out of yesterday's fine effort in good shape.

An interesting poll question has been posed on the discussion board: Have you started watching more horseracing because of Barbaro?.

Update 552: Thank you Cecil Whig for the lovely front page article: Online outpouring of support for Barbaro.

I asked Michael this morning if Dr. Richardson had finally gone away for a few days (this was after Michael had given me the morning report). Michael said he had, and he also said he had told Dr. Richardson that given he was away on vacation there really was no need for the morning updates. They then wondered a little about what I would do ? So I guess (and HOPE) Dr. Richardson will still be calling in the reports!

Update 549: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (sunday night). Just spoke to Michael Matz behind the gate. He said that everything looked good after the cast change yesterday. He expressed that everyone seemed happy with Bobby's progress.

Happy Birthday Dr. Richardson- And Thank You, Kennett Florists

Today is Dr. Dean Richardson's birthday. NBC gave him a surprise party!. Here is a special thanks from NBC to everyone who has contributed cards, love, support and prayers.

From Tim Woolley's site this afternoon:

Update 532: Dr. Richardson posted a thank you note to everyone (timestamp: 7:55pm):

Kathy Freeborn at the admissions desk here at NBC told me that this website was the best place to respond to the truly extraordinary birthday that I was given today at noon! To all of you who gave to the Barbaro fund and to me personally, I am deeply grateful. I don't claim to be a humble person (no one will argue that one too much!) but it is profoundly humbling and intimidating to be responsible for a patient that has this much love going his way. I am very grateful that there is so much concern out there for Barbaro (sorry, I cannot bring myself to call him Bobby......)and I assure you all that we all will continue to do our best for him. As you all know, he is a very special horse.

THANK YOU ALL.

Update 531: Kennett Florist have just returned from NBC with this birthday report:

OK Gang, take a breath... We're back from NBC!!

The "party" was a huge success! Dr R was very surprised to which he stated "it's not my birthday". We told him "today it is!" He was overwhelmed with the gifts, cards, flowers and all that had been sent. I am forwarding the pictures to Alex and he can hopefully post a couple.

We got there just before 11:30 to set everything up. We were in a more secluded area. We had the gifts and flowers laid out over two tables with the cakes and ice cream. The carrot cake from Bobby had two big carrots on the top, and the choc/vanilla cake had a picture of Bobby (from one of his first times out grazing) with green and blue trim on the white frosting.

Dr Sweeney had told Dr Richardson that they were going to have a meeting at 12:00 and she made sure we were ready when she went to meet him. She had notified a bunch of people so there would be plenty there to yell surprise. (Unfortunately, Mr and Mrs Jackson were unable to attend.) Dr Sweeney told us when she was going to get him and we lit the candles... He was very surprised. He blew out his candles and started to cut the cakes (the one thing he said he knew how to do). Dr Sweeney and Alie took over on cake duty and I dished out the ice cream so the man of honor could enjoy his cake and open some presents. He was overwhelmed by the gifts. Because of your contributions, we were able to get substantial gift certificates to two very nice restaurants here in town, theater tickets (gift certificate), three different golf course gift certificates that he can use either for greens times, the pro shop, or the restaurants, a packet of golf cart tickets for the golf course he belongs to, as well as a gift certificate to the pro shop at that same course. We also made up a very large gourmet basket of goodies; swiss chocolates, pastas and gourmet sauces, plates, glasses, napkins... the works. It even had a special box of note cards with a big brown bay on the front. We decked the place out with baloons (including one that sang Happy Birthday)! The triple crown arrangement was a huge hit... he really liked the idea of that. All in all it was absolutely wonderful. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of this, you all have been so generous and sweet to talk to, email, etc.

And of course, Bobby had some baskets of carrots and his favorite treats! They called us this morning asking if we were bringing carrots, so we loaded the big guy up good!

Also, almost forgot... We made up a big "publisher's clearinghouse" type check from the Barbaromaniacs, made out to UPenn Barbaro Fund in honor of Dr Richardson. Dr Sweeney presented him with the check that was made out for $3,851.00 to date. We let him know that others are donating on or closer to his birthday! You all are amazing!!!!

WE BELIEVE!!!

Alie, Rachel and the gang at Kennett Florist

Congratulations to everyone who contributed, amazing.

The AOL Barbaro Love Vigil sent a gift to Dr. Richardson: Here are the pictures:

We wish to thank Kennett Florist   Kennett Florist Inc -- Kennett Square, PA : www.kennettflorist.net  for their incredible service several times during this very difficult time for Barbaro. They really are  genuinely warm and caring folks who take the time to be of service to so many. So, if you need a florist in that area, please do contact them. We love them!!

Tim Woolley Update 55 8/25 "ACN" and some great articles

Update 528: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). Just saw Michael Matz as I was going to the track on my third set (on Chappy), he had heard from Dr. Richardson. Its a muggy morning at Fair Hill, and we have not had the rain that seemed to be in the forecast (yet).
update 7:35 am, friday, august 25

Update 527: This Baltimore Sun article provides further details on the current status of Barbaro: Barbaro's surgeon pleased with colt's progress and reveals the left hind hoof has grown a centimeter, excerpt:

Richardson said Barbaro's hoof has grown about one centimeter since the hoof wall was removed in early July and his broken right leg has healed well enough that without the left-foot laminitis, he would be out of the cast.

A nice Sports Illustrated article on Michael Matz: What could've been... As Barbaro fights for life, Matz reflects on fateful day. A short excerpt:

Matz is a competitor, a three-time Olympic equestrian. "It hurts to be standing on the sideline,"' he says. "I wish I could send Barbaro out there to run. I can't, and I have to accept that we were lucky to have him as long as we did.'"

And finally: Barbaro casts long shadow over Travers: Injured horse has greatly boosted sport with incredible will to survive. I think this site confirms the subheader. I enjoyed this excerpt:

In essence he is much more. Barbaro is a horse who continues to demonstrate what it means to be a thoroughbred. Intelligent and strong, showing a will to live beyond anything we've seen in four decades of watching horses do what they were bred to do.

Barbaro's struggle for survival has provided inspiration for Internet poets and his daily regimen has been chronicled nightly on network broadcasts whenever newsworthy developments arose.

My Brave Soldier- Tribute to Joey- for RUSTYSGOLDENSONG

Oftentimes when one loses a beloved "pet"- whether dog, cat, horse, bird, or other beloved creature, one of the most healing things we can do is to write, to journal, to share our feelings with others. It helps us to accept the difficult reality and at the same time, it helps others to feel understood and to acknowledge that we, too, have been through these losses, and that our feelings are normal. So often we are not understood, but to see and to feel what others have gone through, validates our feelings and help us to heal.

This entry, sent to me by RUSTYSGOLDENSONG this morning, is, for me, is an exceptionally feeling and beautiful tribute to the loss of her beloved dog, Joey. She has shared the experience with us so beautifully.

August 23.2006,

Yesterday, I lost my sweet boy. He lost his fight with cancer and pain.
I had to shut my heart off and think of "HIM" to not hold on, because I could not stand the thought of losing him! I wanted time to stop and bring the time back of when he was that bundle of fur that I brought home from the shelter.

Joey would have been 12 next month.

For you see, I know that being a "parent" to a "fur baby" we may be asked at one time, to make a decision that will change our lives forever, but for me, I had to make this decision, just four months ago for my sweet Toby. He too had cancer and was going home to his brother Bandit, who had gone home to Jesus one and a half years ago.

So you see, it was hard for me, I was yelling at my vet on the phone telling her that "I can't do this!! I just lost my Toby and I can't lose him too,"
The time was one ten, when I arrived at the vet's office. I have been with my vet for 24 years but I got lost in getting there. As I pulled up, there was a husband and wife standing in the driveway, holding a collar and leash. They were holding each other crying. I knew in  my heart what had just happened to them and that I too, would be faced with the tears...

As I walked in, I was taken to a room and told that they would bring Joey to me. When he was, he just stayed so quiet on the cart. I cried so hard into his fur and I remember asking him to not hate me and to remember that I had promised that I would bring him home, But, I could not keep that promise the way I meant it.

I took out my "Holy Water" and rosary and I blessed my boy and begged GOD to let me keep him, to give me a sign that he could come back to me. I looked into Joey's eyes and I could see right into his soul. I could hear him say,"I love you, mama. It's time."

I was with him for thirty minutes. it seemed that the world outside stopped and it was just me and my boy...

You see, Joey had had a very hard life from the beginning. When I got him, he was in the shelter. Six months old, he had his first surgery to his hip. It took six months to get strong enough as he had to have the other side done due to the hip disease to which "Labs" and other large breeds are prone. From that point on, he's had three or four ear surgeries, a lump removed from his foot, and the one in his mouth that was the mast cell. He had at least ten "fatty tumors"at the age of five. I was told that he had "Muscle Degeneration Disease, which would eventually cause him to lose all of his muscle strength and that he would need help.

Five months ago, he reached the point that I was his full care taker. No longer able to get up on his own, he would fall over easily. It broke my heart to see him struggle so.

Just a little over one month ago, Joey would cry at night. I would come into the living room and be with him to soothe his pain. When I took Joey to the Vet, I promised him, that I would come back and bring him home. I just never knew that it would be this way.

As I finish this memorial, listening to the song of "Josh Groban" You can see that I am crying. It was just lunch time and Joey isn't here to beg me for what I had.. and Maxie is so sad that she's behind the couch.

I know as Joey's mama, the last gift that I gave him yesterday was My HEART.. that I set him free. I kept telling him that Toby and Bandit would be at the bridge waiting for him that I knew he would be a big strong boy again...  that he wouldn't hurt anymore..

I have lowered my flag at Half staff and it will be until he comes home again..

Tomorrow I will go andget him. Iwill bring him home just for him to see it for the last time before I take him the long road to the funeral home where he will be cremated. I will then be called and will go and we will take that last journey together to come home again..

I have these words to say,

"Joey, I remember the day that I went to see all the puppies at the shelter, and for some reason, you stood out of all the others. Even with your sister, you stood out... and you just looked like a "Joey"!
You were the "mama" to Maxie when I brought her home at the age of four days. You slept next to her as she slept.  You are my angel that is now in heaven with Bandit and Toby, which guides me at night. I gave you your gift of going home as your mama I let you go, and now I can see you in heaven, playing and sitting at the right hand of GOD, waiting to be fed, being so impatient for your food.

Joey and Maxie (tiny baby)

I long to be with you again my sweet boy... I love you. I am your mama on earth, you are my son in heaven. We will see each other again in Heaven at the Rainbow bridge. I will do my best to take care of Maxie as she too longs for you.
Joey, I love you and you love me. Your mama on earth has given you to the hands of Jesus' mama. She will take care of you 'till we can be together again.

In this world, I have found what love is, and its what you find in the fur babies in our lives that come along when we need them the most.

Joey, I don't want to end this, but I know that I have to..

The words of Josh,"Your memory so clear, that maybe you're still here."
You are watching over me from up above.

I love you Joey, you love me..

"Ditto"

Joey and Jessy

Graphic by M00NLTSNTA

M00NLTSNTA'S grey mare, Kay, after a long struggle for her life losing her foal, has passed over to the Rainbow bridge, yesterday, August 21st. She will now, forever, romp with her baby, never to be separated.

Sleep well sweet one. You will be missed by all who love you.

Tim Woolley Update 52 8/22 ACN- Polar Bear,Alcor Does Not Survive!

Barbaro Updates: 52
Update 509: Just spoke to Peter Brette, who had heard from Michael Matz. Barbaro had another good day.

If you want more insight into my morning exploits (i.e. want to see some of Fair Hill), check this Fair Hill clip, provided to us by HRTV. I am even in it a couple of times! Thanks Tina for sending this over. Tina, who works for HRTV, put this together. Tina used to gallop at Fair Hill, for Dr. Fisher and John Kimmel.

Update 507: New Bolton's latest Barbaro update: Barbaro remains a happy, comfortable horse:

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro remains comfortable according to veterinarians at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital . "Barbaro is doing well on both hind limbs," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "Because of this, we do not plan to change his right hind cast in the next two weeks."

The colt's left hind foot has laminitis, but Barbaro seems comfortable with that foot as well. "He needs to continue to improve over the next few months before we will have a better idea about his long term comfort." said Dr. Richardson. "Barbaro's appetite and his attitude right now are phenomenal; he attacks his feed and when he goes out to graze, he acts like he thinks he could train."

Doctors remain cautious about Barbaro's prognosis because, according to Dr. Richardson, there is no assurance that he will surmount all of his medical problems. "Right now, he is a surprisingly happy horse," he said. "He is gaining weight and has had his pain medications reduced without any effect on his well being. His strength and overall appearance have been improving since he became well enough to be walked outside each day."

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania's George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 29 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro's condition

Update 504: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (monday night). Got the news coming back from my third set as I saw Michael Matz who had just heard from Dr. Richardson. Another beautiful morning here in Fair Hill.

With Loving and Costly Care, Barbaro’s Long Odds Improve- "New York Times" 8/21/06

By JOE DRAPE
Published: August 21, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa., Aug. 17 — Barbaro was reclined on his side in a stall. His left hind foot curled out beneath him, revealing a fitting that his surgeon called a foam-lined rubber sneaker. His right hind leg, the one that has been in a cast for 90 days, was hidden beneath a carpet of knee-deep straw.

Graphic: An Update on Barbaro

Dr. Dean Richardson with Barbaro, now walked outside every day.
University of Pennsylvania, Sabina Louise Pierce, via Associated Press

Barbaro wears a bandage around his neck to protect a catheter, and his left hip has a few white splotches, healing blisters from a combination of his sweat and the antiseptics used in his initial operation. When he awakened from a serene slumber, however, his eyes burned as bright as a Kentucky Derby champion’s. After all, he is a Derby champion.

Barbaro’s owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson, notice that look in his eyes, as does his trainer, Michael Matz, and the medical staff at the George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals. It is why they have never left this horse for dead.

They refused to do so when Barbaro took a catastrophic misstep and shattered his right hind leg in the opening yards of the Preakness Stakes on May 20. They forged on in early July when the colt developed severe laminitis, a painful and often-fatal condition that afflicts horses that bear excessive weight on a limb.

Instead, they have combined aggressive medical treatment with tender loving care in one of the most extraordinary efforts ever mounted to save a top-flight racehorse. Gretchen Jackson comes here twice a day with fresh grass clippings to feed Barbaro. Mr. Matz also arrives daily to change the leg bandages on the best horse that he has ever trained. Barbaro is also fed the carrots and apples that continue to arrive here from the public. He has been doused with holy water sent by well-wishers.

This holistic and community approach seems to be working, not to mention the untold tens of thousands of dollars in medical care.

The sling Barbaro once needed to keep weight off his legs now hangs in storage in another stall, and the epidurals he required for pain have not been necessary for weeks. Best of all, for almost two weeks, Barbaro has been walked outside for 20 or 30 minutes a day in a field, where he grazes on grass and looks every bit like a normal horse.

“He’s been very, very good on his legs,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, his surgeon and the man who leads him outside each day. “It’s exciting. He’s improving.”

Dr. Richardson warned that Barbaro was hardly out of the woods and that a full recovery would not be evident for months. Still, he said he was encouraged by the progress.

On July 13, Dr. Richardson had to compose himself when he announced that laminitis had ravaged Barbaro’s left hind hoof wall and that the chances of survival were poor. Now, his hoof wall is growing back, and his fractured right hind leg appears to be mending, Dr. Richardson said. But he cautioned that until the cast was removed, he could not be certain the leg would be strong enough to bear Barbaro’s weight.

“I think he’s got a 50-50 shot,” said Dr. Richardson, echoing the prognosis he gave May 21, after performing an operation on the colt’s leg for more than five hours. “He’s back to that level. Now, if you would have asked me the same question six weeks ago, I would have told you they were a lot — a lot — less than that.”

Luck, too, will continue to play a part in Barbaro’s convalescence. Gretchen Jackson said good fortune was with them even on May 20, when the colt hobbled to a stop at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.

“When the accident happened right there on the track, Michael Matz and the track veterinarians told us that Barbaro had to go the New Bolton Center and Dean Richardson,” she said. “They knew Dean was a magician putting horses back together, and fortunately, we were just an hour of so away.”

The New Bolton Center is part of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Jacksons have long been among its benefactors; Gretchen Jackson is on the board of the veterinary school.

The Jacksons have been involved in thoroughbred racing for nearly 30 years and have a reputation for going to great lengths for their injured horses. Roy Jackson, whose grandfather William Rockefeller was once the president of Standard Oil, and his wife, Gretchen, have spared no expense when it comes to Barbaro’s recovery.

Update 497: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). Just saw Michael Matz as I was heading to the track on my third set. He had just spoken to Dean Richardson who also noted that he is planning to prepare for surgery on the polar bear today.
It's an absolutely gorgeous morning here at Fair Hill although my early guiding light, the moon, seems to have all but disappeared.

An Interview With A Handicapped Cat-Fluffy, and her FurMom- Laurentha

H P Miou: OK.. how did you find Fluffy?
Fluffy: >^,,^< Meow
H P Miou: or how did Fluffy find YOU?
Laurentha: My son's friend's cat had kittens so she was right down the street.
H P Miou: So did you decide to adopt one of the kittens?
Laurentha: Not really. My son wanted one but we already had 5 cats so I initially said no
H P Miou: OK so tell me more about this.. this is fascinating..
Laurentha: There was one that he wanted and brought him home for me to see. That kitten disappeared :(
H P Miou: Oh no......
Laurentha: As did others since they were outside
H P Miou: Not good to have kittens and Mom outside
Laurentha: I know that and you know that but this woman refuses to have a litter box in the house
H P Miou: Purrhaps that lady need to look for another pet.. but ....
Laurentha: They are NOT very responsible pet owners!
H P Miou: So how did you come across Fluffy?
Laurentha: As I said, she was one of their kittens. They actually had two litters at the time.. The cats do go in and out of the house. After she had been injured, they continued to let her live outside. My son decided that if she was going to have any chance at all that she needed to be at our house so he brought her home.
H P Miou: What was her injury like?
Laurentha: The injury was an accident. The son swung his bedroom door closed, she ran thru the door right at that time and got caught in door. It caught her right before her rear legs and broke her spine. Besides rendering her unable to support her backside she also became incontinent.
H P Miou: Oh my, how sad! What did your vet suggest?
Laurentha: By the time I got her it had already healed and her right rear leg was hyperextended so there wasn't much that could be done. The fracture was right before the bladder which is what was causing the incontinence. She did give me suggestions on how to work with her to TRY to get her on her feet.
H P Miou: Well that was good that she offered you alternatives to a much less positive outcome.. so what did she suggest? Was she supportive to your adopting this baby?
Laurentha: She is VERY supportive. She does rehab on spinal injury dogs and has incontinent dogs herself. She attempted to show me how to express her bladder. To try to get her walking, she told us to basically use her tail as a handle. Get her up, hold the tail and try to get her to walk that way. However, she was not very positive that it would really work but felt that it was worth a try. I do still do that with her some but it didn't work well.
H P Miou: So Fluffy, how do you feel about all of this? Was it hard for you to begin your rehabilitation?
Fluffy: Hissssssssssssssssssssssssssssss I don't like it at all but it is fun to go for a ride once in a while. And I can get places a little faster with some help!
H P Miou: What is the hardest thing for you, Fluffy, in your condition?
Fluffy: I can't jump which is a bummer. I can get up on the beds by climbing but it is hard work. I know this person means well but I REALLY hate when she puts a diaper on me and squishes me to make me go pee and poop.
H P Miou: But you know she loves you, right, Fluffy?
Fluffy: I guess so. It sure beats living outside in the dirt. OH heck... I know she does!
H P Miou: While I know this has been a "bummer" for you in many ways, I see that you really are becoming adjusted to your handicaps and are making quite a bit of progress. I admire you for your courage. This being said.. You seem to be an "emissary" for pets who are handicapped, Fluffy. What do you have to say to folks who may be considering adopting a "handicapped " pet? Do you think that "special needs" pets offer people something that they will feel good about? Do you have any suggestions for folks considering adopting or keeping a handicapped pet in their homes?
Fluffy: Well, you know, a lot of people wouldn't bother. Dr Carolyn's partner is one who doesn't think I'm worth all the bother. That makes me go HSSSSSSSSSS.  I am happy and healthy just like a person that has a similar type problem.
My biggest suggestion is to talk to others, read, read, read. There is great support on the Internet for people to help them take care of cats and other pets like me
I am lucky because I a lot of kitties have much worse problems then I do but they can still be loving and loved and lead very good lives with the proper assistance.
H P Miou: Boy, Dr. Carolyn's partner could learn a thing or two from your experience with a caring kitty Mom, Fluffy. Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy day to talk with us this morning. I have one more question for your "Mom" so you can go back to sleeping or enjoying your lunch. You have been so helpful in sharing your story with
me. Do you have anything else before you go to share?
Fluffy: I can share tons. LOL (and Fluffy goes back to sleep)!
Laurentha: Fluffy came to us totally unexpected. I really had a crash course in how to take care of her. In retrospect, I am glad that I did take her in.  While she is a royal brat, she has a personality that just won't quit.  Taking care of her doesn't really involve much more time then the other "healthy" ones. The big thing is to keep her clean She is more susceptible to urinary infections or impacted feces but since I've learned how to express both bladder and bowels, that lessens the risk there.
H P Miou: What would you say has been the best part of your adopting Fluffy? What have been the most difficult for you?
Laurentha: I guess the best part is knowing that were she not here she would most likely be dead now. The most difficult has been in learning HOW to take care of her special needs. I am lucky in that her needs are much less then others I've heard about.
H P Miou: I just want to applaud you for what you did for Fluffy, Laurentha.. and it really demonstrates that it is "ability" that counts... not disability.. but I wanted to ask you about Internet support and how folks may find that vital connection. Do you recommend any particular websites or support groups?
Laurentha: I sure can!
H P Miou: GREAT!
Laurentha: www.handicappedpets.com is the place to start. Besides having all kinds of products for disabled pets of all species, they have excellent support I belong to two yahoo groups -Handicats2 and CatsWithParalysis. Both are moderated groups.
Laurentha: There are other really good yahoo groups out there also The groups are wonderful for support. There are very caring people who can help answer questions
and give advice. I would really be lost without all the online support as they have been instrumental in helping me learn how to care for her. OH... one other thing....
H P Miou: sure.. go ahead .. please!
Laurentha: If your vet says to put down your pet just because there is a disability, find another vet! I will no longer see my vet's partner because of that attitude!
And yes, adisabled cat CAN live very comfortably in a multi-pet household!
Fluffy:
(Wakes up and looks at Laurentha) Purrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
H P Miou: Thanks Laurentha! I agree with you. Purrhaps a vet that recommends Euthanasia just because a pet is disabled should find another profession. I think that educating veterinarians is part of OUR task too that we can have loving, meaningful relationships with all animals who are special needs, and in fact, often times that relationship is enhanced and deepened. Bless you for your love and I think that pets find us. who need us.. and I hope to get updates on Ms Fluffy as you can.Take care and thank you for your time!
Laurentha: Thank you for letting us tell Fluffy's story.
H P Miou: It is an honor, actually!
Laurentha: OH..  And if anybody wants to contact me about the groups, I hope they do so. I will help anybody at all that I can. They can reach me at Laurentha@aol.com
H P Miou: Thank you again..
Laurentha: Your most welcome
H P Miou: Have a great rest of your day:)
Laurentha: Bye

A Call For Support From Angel's Gate! Please Read!

Artwork by Liv Carson

Dear Friend of Angel's Gate,

The following article appears in today's Sunday, NY Times. As it is hard to locate on line I have reprinted it below.

As the legal battle is heating up, our finances are severely strained.   This would be a good time to send a donation.

An Animal Sanctuary Is Under Pressure to Move

The New York Times  Sunday, August 20.2006
By LINDA F. BURGHARDT
Published: August 19, 2006

THE more than 200 animals living at 18 Josephine Lane in the hamlet of Fort Salonga, NY, are there because they are sick or disabled. They are also there illegally, the town of Smithtown ruled recently, but their owners are not giving up without a fight.

The birds and beasts live in a residential animal hospice on Long Island, and their owners, Susan Marino and Victor LaBruna, are fighting an amendment to the towns zoning code that may have the muscle to close it.

“This is discrimination, pure and simple, and well take it to the highest court before we let them shut us down,” said Ms. Marino, who has operated the hospice, called Angel’s Gate, for 13 years.

People who can no longer care for their ailing pets take them to the hospice, and Ms. Marino and Mr. LaBruna take them in. The dogs, cats, ducks, geese, chickens, goats, ponies and pigeons live at the couple's home, a 2,500-square-foot ranch house, which is on an acre and a third.

Patrick Vecchio, the town supervisor, insisted that no decision had been made on whether to shut down the hospice but that the town wanted it moved.

“We're not critical of the service, but we believe a home in a residential zone is not an apt place for this facility,” he said. “Volunteers come and go. Parking is an issue. Twelve cans of garbage every pickup day; that can be hard on the neighbors.”

The amended law, adopted July 11, bans animal hospices in residential zones but not in commercial districts.

“The amendment was necessary because the town never had a category for animal hospices before,” Mr. Vecchio said. “Angel’s Gate will have to comply.”

But Dan Dillon, a lawyer for the hospice, said he had appealed the zoning change and would sue the village if he loses. Mr. LaBruna said that more than 5,000 people had signed a petition asking the town not to amend its law to make the hospice illegal.

“The town board says the hospice belongs in an industrial park, but why should Ms. Marino have to live in a warehouse?” Mr. Dillon said. “The amendment lumps the nonprofit hospice with moneymaking enterprises like veterinary clinics. But these are her pets, and there's no legal limit on the number she's allowed to have.”

Mr. LaBruna said that he and Ms. Marino moved to Smithtown because the area was zoned for agricultural use and animals would be allowed.

In May, Leonard and Shirley Samansky drove to Angel’s Gate from their home in Great Neck to see if it was the right place for their beloved but incontinent 17-year-old Jack Russell terrier, Sam.

“There was no garbage, no odor, just happy, thriving animals and the magnificent people who care for them,” Mr. Samansky said.

Today Sam is being cared for by Mr. LaBruna and Ms. Marino.

Tim Woolley Update 50 8/20 (ACN)

Update 489: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (saturday night). I had a nice long chat with Michael as he was ponying a horse (and Stephanie) back from the woodchip track. Dr. Richardson showed Michael the left hind foot yesterday and it appears to be doing whatever it should be doing at this stage of its "recovery". Michael also noted he walks sound (as we saw on the Barbaro grazing video) and is starting to gain some weight.

Tim Woolley Update #48 ACN!!

Update 476: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (thursday night). I was just driving back in to Fair Hill for my third set when I saw Michael's crew heading up to the track. I stopped, got out of my truck, asked the inevitable question, and got the good, positive response. There appears to be a pretty obvious upbeat mood within the barn judging by the poor jokes being cracked at my reporting efforts!

Penn Veterinary Medicine New Bolton Center Barbaro Update 8/17

News Releases:

Barbaro has had a very good week

August 17, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro continues to do well, and is being hand-grazed for 20 – 30 minutes a day. “His blood work is completely normal and his vital signs are good,” said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. “I can’t complain. Barbaro has had a very good week.” Dr. Richardson also reports that Barbaro is no longer using the sling. “His comfort level has improved to the point that when he was in the sling, he wasn’t “using” it at all. The sling is only bearing the horse’s weight when he wants it to, and Barbaro’s comfort level has improved to the point that he was not using the sling to support his weight.”

Barbaro remains in the Intensive Care Unit of the University of Pennsylvania’s George D. Widener Hospital, where he is recovering from injuries suffered at the Preakness on May 20.

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, August 22 unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

For more information on Barbaro, please see www.vet.upenn.edu.

Tim Woolley's Update 47 8/17 ACN!- And Some Spectacular Videos

Barbaro Updates: 47

Update 466: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Just walked over to get the news from Michael Matz after I came off my third set this morning. He mentioned that Bobby was out grazing for 30-40 minutes yesterday.
Also, Barclay Tagg is in town for a couple of days. I will try to get an interview with him a little later. Meanwhile, another spectacular morning in Fair Hill today.

Tim Woolley Update 46 8/16 ACN!!!!

Barbaro Updates: 46

Update 463: Kathy Anderson just called (7:45 pm) and she was just leaving Barbaro, who was laid down, in an upright position, eating fresh picked grass from a bowl! As she was leaving his masseuse was arriving, who prefers to massage him laying down as he is then less active. Kathy's report was upbeat.

Update 457: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (tuesday night). Saw Michael Matz as I was coming back from the track on my third set. Before I could even ask how Bobby was doing, Michael gave me the positive report.

On my first set this morning (5:30am), I was jogging back with Man in Havana...or at least that's who I think it was, it was a little hard to see. As we were coming back, two fox cubs were chasing eachother around in circles right on the horsepath. Which while very cute, required me to tighten my grip on the neck strap and my horse's mane.

Second set, I went out back and not only saw another fox cub but was surrounded by many deer. Of course, I again didn't let go of my neck strap! It's really a beautiful morning here in Fair Hill.

From "Horsetalk" August 15th, 2006 NEWS!

Dr Dean Richardson takes Barbaro for some grass.

Photos: Sabina Louise Pierce/University of Pennsylvania

The almost impossible to believe in the Barbaro saga has finally happened - he has been able to take outings to a grassy area by his hospital stable. Barbaro has been grazing for a few minutes each day and enjoying the change of scenery and fresh air.

After almost three months in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn's George D. Widener Hospital, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro begun the brief outings last week.

"We felt he was ready for a change of scenery, so last week we took him outside to pick his own grass," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery.

"He's not outside for a long time, but it's enough to let him enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. If he remains this comfortable, he will be hand-grazed daily.

"I'm very pleased with his progress," said Dr. Richardson.

"His appetite remains strong, he sleeps well, and we continue to monitor him closely. He is measurably gaining weight and his overall attitude is great."

The photos show the cast on the right hind leg, which encloses the foot and extends up to just below the hock, the bandage on the left hind foot and support wraps on Barbaro's front legs.

The Tim Woolley Racing site reported earlier this week that New Bolton had released a video of Barbaro walking out to graze. "It clearly shows Bobby walking comfortably, and enjoying the great outdoors!" Alex Brown says.

The site also quotes an excerpt from Thoroughbred Times: "That's the first time he's been outside since we brought him in," said Gretchen Jackson.

"Dean took him out, and he just stood there for easily five minutes, looking at the scenery like, 'Oh my God, I'd forgotten about all of this.' He just looked around for some time before he put his head down, and then he ate away and was probably out for a good 20 minutes, enjoying himself. It was just the nurses out there and maybe a few vets and I think there were quite a few tears shed to see him do that."

Tim Woolley Update 44 8/14 INCREDIBLE VIDEO

Barbaro Updates: 44

Update 444: New Bolton's video: Barbaro Video, August 14. You need quicktime. Its 3m 51 secs. and includes a short interview with Dr. Richardson at the end. It clearly shows Bobby walking comfortably, and enjoying the great outdoors!

Update 443: Thoroughbred Times reports Bobby's grazing: Barbaro grazes outside following cast change which includes the following excerpt:

"That's the first time he's been outside since we brought him in," said Gretchen Jackson, who bred and campaigned Barbaro along with her husband, Roy, in the name of their Lael Stables.

Update 442: New Barbaro pictures: Barbaro hand-grazes at the New Bolton Center with Dr. Dean Richardson..

Update 441: New Bolton Center's press release today (not yet on their site): Barbaro well enough to hand graze outside:

After almost three months in the Intensive Care Unit of Penn's George D. Widener Hospital, Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has begun brief outings to some grassy areas adjacent to the ICU to hand graze. "We felt he was ready for a change of scenery, so last week we took him outside to pick his own grass," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery. "He's not outside for a long time, but it's enough to let him enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. If he remains this comfortable, he will be hand-grazed daily."

Photos will be available on the Penn Vet Web site later today that show Barbaro being walked to the ICU's grazing area.

Update 440: As many have noted in the comments, Barbaro was on Good Morning America this morning. Here is the Video from "Good Morning America". The video they used will be posted to New Bolton's site soon (as Dr. Richardson told us this morning) along with photographs! I believe the footage is from friday.
Update 439: Another comfortable night for Barbaro last night (sunday night). Just saw Michael  Matz as I was going to the track on my third set...he was literally hanging up the phone with Dr. Richardson. Dr. Richardson also said that there will be new video of Bobby on the New Bolton Center site today. I believe there will be new photos as well.
updated monday 7:05am

Update 438: I am hoping Michael Matz is now back from Saratoga (I won't know until I see him at Fair Hill). If so then I hope our morning update will be that, in the morning! I have about nine to ride, but should be able to get a little free time if I get the morning report. In the meantime, keep enjoying the cartoon caption contest, there are already close to 100 entries and it was only posted yesterday!

Tim Woolley Update 43 8/13

Update 436: Another comfortable day for Bobby, just spoke to Peter. He was unable to visit today but had heard from Michael. It does appear that all in all, this has been a good week. Despite that, we do need to remember that we have a long way to go, we should however be thankful for the progress that we are hearing.

Rio- A Very Special Angel Dog- In Memory, for Shannon and Doug

"Rio"

Jan 1993 ---- Dec 7, 2005
Rottweiler

I was deeply moved in reading "Rio's Story" this morning and wanted to share it here. It is beautifully written, filled with love and comes straight from the heart. It is the story of a dog who was deeply loved. Please do take the time to visit this website and pause, for a moment, feeling that love. And to really feel, with the author what goes into making that very difficult decision about when to say "good-bye" to a critically ill pet. Thank you Shannon for sharing Rio with us and for what you teach us about unconditional love.

Tim Woolley Update 42 8/12 Great news!

Update 429: ABCs interview with the Jackson's was short but VERY sweet. Its confirmed, Bobby has been led out to graze. This was earlier reported by Jane (update 41 4:54 am

Just got back from a week in Saratoga where I saw Michael Matz, the Jacksons and Dr Richardson in the paddock on Sunday. Dr Richardson presented the trophy for a race sponsored by New Bolton. He looked relaxed and happy and the Saratoga Special reported that during Dr Richardson's afternoon there, he was asked well over one hundred times about Barbaro and he was able to report that all was well.

Yesterday, Edgar Prado was autographing pictures of his winning ride in the Derby on Barbaro. The proceeds went to the Race Track Chaplaincy. I thanked him for being so good to Barbaro and he replied that Barbaro had been very good to him, too. Edgar did say to the man in front of me that he had heard that they had taken Barbaro out to graze on Thursday morning. Whether that can be verified or not, I don't know. But he did say that he was up there to see him about 2 weeks ago and was very pleased with how well he was doing. Edgar is certainly a very nice person and a class act. You can tell how much he truly cares about Barbaro. His face, which is normally quite solemn, lights up when he talks about him.

Update 428: Another comfortable night (friday night) for Barbaro. Just heard from Peter who had heard from Michael Matz.

ABC will broadcast a brief Bobby update (which may include soundbites of an interview with the Jackson's if they are able to do the interview) about 30 minutes into their show. They will also broadcast an interview with Graham Motion as a lead up to the Beverly D.
edit, changed ESPN to ABC!

Tim Woolley Update 41 8/11

Tim Woolley Horseracing: Race Horse Trainer :: News: Barbaro Updates: 41

Update 424: Peter Brette just called and Bobby seems to have had another good day. There is also a lovely thank you from New Bolton Center: Thank You and Kennett Florist left this note:

Just got back from NBC. We loaded them up with treats for Bobby for the weekend. Dr Sweeney reassured me and also wanted to let you know that they ARE getting to Bobby. She had someone bring a basket up to him as I was there. I admire this lady more and more each day.

I was talking to one of the staff and they were thinking about planting a "Barbaro Garden" of bulbs, so in the srping they could be reminded of him with beautiful colors and flowers. I think this is a wonderful ideas, and will try to get my hands on some bulbs.

We have stud muffins on the way! So we will include those in the baskets next week. I was told on Wednesday by one of the guys that works with Bobby, that he really likes them. Anything the boy wants... the boy gets!! Love to you all!

WE BELIEVE!!

Rachel at Kennett Florist

Update 423: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (thursday night), and a good morning. Peter has just visited and called to let me know (2:15 pm). Again he was upbeat. I asked him about the roses (traditionally worn after the Derby win). Apparently there were roses to wear after the Florida Derby win, he did not want anything to do with those, so for the KY Derby they did not want to push it. They did do something for a couple of quick pictures (I think Edgar jumped off for those), but that was it.

The Long Run! Symbolic Meaning?

My day began in the usual way..logged onto AOL , reading my mail, waiting for the update from Tim Wooley's site for results of Barbaro's cast change yesterday. I began to increasingly consider about what is driving the countless number of people who are sitting right along side me, somewhere on the Internet, waiting and wondering and praying that all is OK, and that we will have another "another comfortable night" message, along with a positive report from New Bolton Center.

And I think to myself... do people really "get it"? Do folks really understand what is beyond the updates and the hats and t- shirts that we purchase, and the inordinate number of online groups that have formed who "meet" to talk about Barbaro, the amazing number of websites that have gone up, not only for newsworthy events but to help raise funds for favorite horse charities such as  Penn Veterinary Medicine :  Alumni & Friends :  Alumni Giving .

The message which New Bolton Center posts on their site is extremely clear about their purpose for fund raising, particularly at this time,"Gifts made to the New Bolton Fund will go directly to improving the equipment and services of the New Bolton Center, for treating animals like Barbaro - and countless others - in their times of need" It speaks right to the heart of all horse lovers all over the world.

But it is not just that horse lovers rally around the progress of our Kentucky Derby winner who was injured so tragically at the Preakness, dissolving our hopes of having a Triple Crown winner into oblivion. There is much more to this phenomenon that must be capturing our hearts and thoughts.

Yes, we are accused of being "Barbaromaniacs," (a new term that has been coined, which we actually happen to love as it fits us to a "T)." We are accused of anthropomorphizing to the extreme. We are accused of being fixated on the progress of this horse, but WHY are we doing this? What is causing this apparent compulsion?

Perhaps in the world of today, we are so in need of a "hero" that embodies the true meaning of the word.   This horse, Barbaro, fits the bill. His courage, his will to survive in spite of the greatest odds against it, his attitude, his willingness to cooperate with his caretakers speaks to us on a very deep and unconscious level. He has become a powerful icon of "Hero."  His veterinary staff, his owners, his trainer and his jockey's hard work, interweave 'iconically' with this magical horse's attitude, which blends love, devotion and the grinding day to day care that they are providing, into a tapestry of pure courage.

Anyone can rally in a moment of crisis. Most of us are "crisis" driven, actually, and take action when a crisis presents itself. It is the day to day, "carrying water and chopping wood" rituals that keeps the flame of hope alive, not only in the case of Barbaro and his recovery, but any cause that is sufficiently powerful to move our hearts.

So let's not throw the baby out with the bath water, and focus only on Barbaro's medical progress, but see the bigger picture of what is involved here. A "hero" is made, not born. We can learn a lot about the parts of us that are "heroic."

We learn a lot about our ability to stay with a cause that is important to us, and the work that it takes to ride with that cause, no matter what. We set an intention and follow our hearts which is the easy part. The hard part is the often dull and boring times, to keep our goal in sight.

How do you keep your heart open? Do you have a "hero"? Have you found that "hero" inside yourself?

Barbaro Updates 39

Update 397: New Bolton's press release, Cast change planned for Barbaro later today:

Doctors at Penn's George D. Widener Hospital plan to change the right hind leg cast of Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro later today. "Changing the cast gives us the opportunity to take new radiographs and evaluate the progress of the fracture healing and joint fusions," said Dr. Dean Richardson, Chief of Surgery.

"His left hind hoof continues to show signs of regrowth and looks healthy," said Dr. Richardson. The colt's left hind foot, which had most of the hoof wall removed due to severe laminitis, has a daily bandage change for examination and treatment.

Update 396: Jeannine Edwards just sent me this e-mail which gives a little insight into the "behind the scenes" of producing a show, and of course Barbaro! ( edited by OBA)

---- (see Tim Woolley update for whole story) I had a nice chat with michael. he said barbaro continues to show that strong spirit and determination. I asked what he sees in his face and eyes when he looks at barbaro.... is it spunk, fear, worry, weariness, etc. he said if anything Barbaro's spirit and attitude are getting better. He said he's not getting tired of the routine, he's getting brighter. He said "he REALLY wants out of the stall.... every time the door opens he's ready." i was happy to hear that and we thank michael for taking the time to chat with me and fill me in a little.

Update 39 ACN:) Good news!

Barbaro Updates 39
Update 389: Just received the following e-mail from Rachel at Kennett Florist:

We headed up to NBC early this morning to treat the staff to Monday morning breakfast of croissants, muffins, danish, donuts, fruit salad, juices and coffee. As always everyone was so thankful and wanted us to convey how much they LOVED everyone who was sending these wonderful treats (which of course was the Barbaro maniacs from the TWR web site), and to send their thanks. As we were heading out one of the staff asked that if we had any deliveries for this afternoon, could we please include carrots.

So up we went this afternoon with lots of Bobby's favorite baby carrots with the greens on top and the baby peeled carrots. We also had a nice basket of goodies specifically for the blood donor horses. I hit the tack stores this weekend and found some different horse treats (even one called 'hoof snacks' - I figured, hey, couldn't hurt). I'll have to find out if Bobby's got any particular favorite ones, since I still can't find the stud muffins. Thanks
again to all of you for the wonderful treats for Bobby as well as the staff; they are very much appreciated.

Also, prospero has agreed to help us! I will hopefully get to implement their software (chatroom and discussion boards) tomorrow.

Update 388: Technical stuff. I have made a request of a vendor to see if they will provide me discussion board and chat software for "free" for three months to see what we can do. (Free = they can serve an ad. etc) Lets see if that can happen. This site is currently ranked 23 on google for the keyword Barbaro. This is a big improvement of late.

Update 387: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (sunday night). Peter Brette just called, he had just heard from Michael (in Saratoga). Phew, sorry for the delay, but it will be kind of like this until Michael returns to Fair Hill (I am not sure when). Love this painting of the Derby, I can spot Bobby in front!

Online Vigil Held August 5th at 7:00 PM

We will meet every night at 7:00 PM ET Barbaro Love Vigil

Graphic By Links For Peace

Our Prayer Vigil held on AOL last night, to coincide with the prayers being said throughout the world, with the flames of thousands of candles brightly burning, igniting the power of our prayers.. sending that healing energy to Barbaro for a complete and total healing, keeping him safe and free of pain so that he will be restored to health.

Sharing them here now with all my readers, we request that you meditate on them and send those prayers from your heart and soul so they too may be absorbed by the great mystery above.. and sent directly to Barbaro, his owners and all the great people who administer to him constantly and lovingly.

Vicky's prayer:
Dear Lord, we pray that you would watch over our Barbaro.
And that you will continue to lay your healng hands on him.
And that you will keep him comfortable, and free of pain.
Be with him our Lord, his owners, and caretakers,
and help him to be restored to as normal a horse as he can be.
We ask these things in your name. Amen.

Jo's prayer:
And as we pray here in this room.. and reach
out our hands to each other in this room.. and
extend our hands to all who are praying right  now for Barbaro..
and his owners and caretakers.. may we open our hearts to continue in the spirit of unconditional love to bring healing  to this amazing horse, and in doing so.. to us also. Amen.

Ruler Of The Wind- A Poem For Barbaro

The wind knows you..
The wind loves you..
The wind has kissed you..
and you..dark wonder horse.. have danced with the wind..

The wind misses you...
The wind sings to you each day
Breathing  life ..healing and health so softly..whispering...
That she longs to dance with you again..

Yet at this time, when that dance has
become a cherished memory in your mind..
It still.. is... with ... you...
It caresses your body gently where you sleep..
and.. heal...and dream ..

She lulls you to peaceful rest..
Whistles softly...sweetly..
She will always be with you..
and you with her..
Sweet Barbaro.. ruler of the wind..

This is a MUST See.. We Need Laughter Too!

I found this link on Tim's website this morning. Being curious I HAD to check it out. I am STILL laughing so hard and I just so appreciate the humor and love that went into this. So while we continue praying for More "Another Comfortable Night" and send our love to "Bobby" and his team, a good belly laugh is something that I am sure will send "tickled" energy and laughter IS, as we know, the BEST MEDICINE.

SKETCH OF THE MONTH (June,2006)

Tim Woolley's Update 33 8/3 SOME GREAT NEWS!

Update 364: New Bolton's press release today: Barbaro continues to improve:

Update 363: Another comfortable night for Barbaro (wednesday night). Saw Michael Matz as I was coming back from the track on my second set. He had just heard from Dr. Richardson. I also expressed my condolences to Michael about the passing of Mr. Dixon.
Updated Thursday 7:05am

Update 362: The Philadephia Inquirer article about this site was picked up by a couple of other news media the next day, with a new title: Barbaro's fans hold Web vigil. Oddly, while the Lexington Herald Leader seemed to be first to pick it up, others (ContraCostaTimes and MiamiHerald) did so using the Lexington Heralds "title tag", so they must have simply used the same "code" as the Lexington Herald ? I assume Lexington Herald got the story from MercuryNews.

Tim Woolley's Update 30! A Must READ

Barbaro Updates: 30

Update 357: Kennett Florist visited NBC today and had this to report (updates 29: 7:49pm):

Breakfast this morning, was a hit as usual! Fresh bagels and all the fixin's... They were still hot! Before they even announced it there were people waiting to dig in. I had the chance to meet a fellow Barbaromaniac, Kathy (who was so generous to supply breakfast for NBC today), as she was on her way to NBC to hang a sign. I hope she has a safe trip to IL the next couple of days. It was so nice to finally meet one of the people we've spent time talking with... You know, if anyone is planning a trip this way, we reccommend coming during the mushroom festival in September - one of Kennett Square's main events.

All is quiet this afternoon. I hid away a big basket of goodies for the 3rd shift and brought up some treats for Bobby. It's so wonderful to hear from Dr. Anderson that he still has that 'larger than life' personality! Thank you all again for all the love and support for Bobby and the NBC staff.

WE BELIEVE!!

Rachel at Kennett Florist

Vicky Jasch, who was interviewed for our Philadelphia Inquirer story had this to add about the interview (updates 29: 7:43pm):

It was a lot of fun answering Mike's questions for his article posted today. AS I said in the article, Barbaro blew me away the first time he ever set foot on the track, and I was his #1 fan before most people knew he existed. And I still am. I am so glad there are so many people rooting for him, and praying for him. But from the very start, I felt such a strong connection with him as I felt his mighty power that he exerted. He made my heart beat fast, as I knew from his first start, he was something so special. Something that we had not seen in over 2 decades. He is the first horse since the Bid in 1979 that I thought had a very good shot at the crown. Now, my prayer is only for his full recovery. He has made his mark in the history books, and in my heart forever.

Update 356: Must read AP interview: Barbaro's right hind healing well. its an interview today with Dr. Richardson.

Tim Woolley's Updates 29 8/1 Another Comfy Night For Barbaro, etc.

Barbaro Updates: 29
Update 353: This site was featured in an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer today: To check up on Barbaro, check out his blog. I wanted to thank Mike Jensen for the great story, and Michael Bryant for the cool pictures (they are in the real paper, page 5 of the sports section). The paper actually has a more complete story than the online version. I see the online version is also available via mercurynews etc. I really appreciate the coverage! As I am sure people are aware, this site would not be possible without the support of many, I am going to name some, but no doubt will forget others who are important: Michael Matz, Peter Brette, Kathy Anderson, Tim Woolley, Eliza, Jen, Annie etc. Mike and Michael, thanks for coming down to Fair Hill.

Update 352: Another comfortable night last night for Barbaro (monday night). Michael Matz gave me the update as I was heading out to the track on my third set this morning. It was good to see Michael back at Fair Hill.
Kathy Anderson visited Bobby yesterday evening and also reported that he was doing well. He was in good spirits and looking for a good rub which he of course received, in the form of a massage from Kathy!
updated Tuesday morning 7:35 am

Update 351: As we wait for an update this morning we have an article and a new poem. The DailyLocal.com: Vet: Barbaro's smarts aiding his recovery, is a nice article on the intelligence of Barbaro, and how he has adapted to his current situation, it quotes both Peter Brette and Kathy Anderson. The following is an excerpt:

"Barbaro is not aggressive, but he is very confident," Anderson said.

"He has always been in charge of his space, and he continues to assert that at the hospital. He's become known as a sneak biter. When people turn their back on him, he tries to bite them. They turn around and he's like, 'Who did that, butter wouldn't melt in my mouth.' I think that's pretty clever."

Anderson added: "He's adapted to the sling. I like to think he understands that if I shift my weight this way, I feel better. I'd say that's not typical of racehorses. They're so competitive, they just react, rather than having a planned action."

Our Prayer Vigil Last Night, 7/31

Last night's vigil (7/31/06)  for Barbaro will be a treasured memory for the rest of my life. We have been meeting, as a small group, nightly since the first real life vigil was held on 7/15/06. The room has been flooded with hope, prayers, tears and a great deal of love, not only for Barbaro, but between the members who meet each night to light a candle, discuss the recent updates concerning his progress, share some "tales" about our experiences with horses, laugh a little about the gifts that we have been sending to NBC, and  also to cement the bond that we have formed during this cautiously optimistic period of Barbaro's recovery. I imagine, if anyone could really enter the room, in reality one would find many burning candles, and the floor of the chatroom littered with damp tissues.

Since I have been feverishly updating my journal with news about "our" stellar horse, it is amazing to feel how very much a part of our lives is filled with thoughts about Barbaro each day. We run to Tim's site many times a day to catch any update, and pray that they will continue to reflect his slow but steady recovery.

But last night was different. Last night I was honored with an amazing gift from the group, thanking me for keeping this journal accessible and timely. While most of the entries that I have made, recently are devoted to Barbaro, the actual motivation for my creating this journal initially, was to make a safe and secure place for people who are grieving over a loss of a beloved pet, and for those who are dealing with pets who are seriously or terminally ill. While Barbaro cannot be considered a "pet," he has become part of us... as if we all are his owners, and our prayers are no different than if we were praying for a friend's beloved pet.

Last night will remain a very special memory for me. The gift that I was given was a picture of me atop Barbaro, flying free, being able to actually "breeze" this magnificent creature of God.

My dear friend, Rosi, created this wonderful graphic that I felt so moved to share here on my journal.

I cannot thank this group enough for this incredible tribute and gift. I cannot thank this group enough for joining together each night for a ritual that will continue until such time that Barbaro is totally out of danger, and yes, we will continueto meet every night at 7:00 PM. ET, to say prayers and to share this amazing force of energy that we are pumping out to him together. Please do join us.
