ABC News Story on Pitbulls (News) - Please Call Numbers

ABC News Story on Pitbulls (News) - Please Call Numbers :
It was rather amazing that I received this journal entry the day after I posted prayers for Cassie. It clearly talks about how Pit Bull's reputations are blown out of proportion and how the breed can be maligned.

Just as any breed of dog or cat can have representatives of the breed that behave dangerously due to breeding or lack of training or early socialization, it is quite clear from  the entry in "Tails and Tales of New York" that this breed actually is known for it's gentle and loving disposition.

It is really up to the owners to bring out the really wonderful traits of their pets. Anything else demeans the breeds and continues the false information that has been spread about them. I think that training an animal to be vicious or not recognizing the signs of possible aggression really is cruel to the animal, no matter which breed it is.

Prayers Needed For Cassius- A Pet Boxer- Mauled- In Critical Condition and Update 12/28

Kidznpupz (Joanne) asks you all to please include Cassius - a pet boxer in your prayers! She belongs to two little boys that her older daughter baby-sits. He was at a dog park and attacked by a pit bull who was obviously not being controlled by his owner, He was terribly mauled and his injuries were so extensive that her daughter won't even tell me exactly what happened to her. She knows her Mom.

He is in critical condition at Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus, NJ - An excellent facility

So we ask that you all include her (yes - Cassius is a girl) -- they call her Cassie (Cassius-Boxer - get it)? It would be so great. She really is in bad shape and Joanne knows your prayers would help. She sends her thanks in advance for all your support at this time.

Update on Cassius: From Joanne:

Dear Friends

Cassius underwent surgery yesterday to repair the extensive damage that she received from the attack. (Note from Journal Auther:I, as journal editor, have edited the graphic description of the injuries that Cassius received, as children may be reading this journal.)  She is stable now and has had several transfusions for blood loss but all things being equal she may be able to go home in a couple of days. Her eyesight - yes her eyes were injured too in the attack - seems to be functioning.

So thank you God it seems that she will be able to rejoin her family.
Thank you so much for your prayers - you guys are the best

Glow and Prayers Needed For Dio -Weimaraner Puppy 6 Months Old.

See Donna9331's comment for a more complete update on Dio. He is home. Prayer does wonders! Be well, Dio and behave yourself, please. I think that the CARE option is really fantastic as a choice for payment. It does give folks the chance to pay off a large bill, interest free, for a year. Thanks for the update, Donna.

Update on Dio: 12/27

As a result of Dio's surgery, it was found that the rawhide was not the "culprit", but that he had ingested a bandana and that was what was causing the blockage. He is still not able to keep food down, so must remain in the hospital until he can do so.  They are giving him small amounts of food every two hours. Prayers are much appreciated by Dio's family. I will keep you updated as I learn more.

Dio, "grandson" to my friend Donna, swallowed a raw hide and has an intestinal blockage. Please send glow and prayers for this sweet puppy. He is so young and his  human "parents" are so worried about him.

Dio is at the E.R. Veterinary Hospital at this time. Glow for a great outcome for you, sweet puppy.

We all send prayers and loving thoughts to Dio and his  family.

Here is a picture of a Weimaraner so we can connect with him more easily.

The Barbaro Love Vigil Poster- Designed and Made by BostonNickyJane

The Barbaro Love Vigil on AOL has been meeting nightly since July 13th, that very terrible day that Dr. Richardson held a press conference announcing that Barbaro had developed a very serious Laminitis in his left hind hoof.

The country wept for this magnificent brave horse who was now involved in the race for his life. This small group of fans and horse lovers gathered together each night at 7:00 PM to say prayers for Barbaro and the folks who were giving him such incredibly brilliant care. We prayed for a miracle, and at this moment it appears that the miracle is coming to pass. Dr. Richardson does not believe in miracles, but we know better about this aspect of Barbaro's recovery!

Barbaro should be able to leave New Bolton Center in the foreseeable future to continue his recuperation from his injuries.

We wanted to share this really wonderful poster with our readers. The poster next to the featured one was also designed by BostonNickyJane. The second poster, is titled, "The Miracle is the Barbaro Spirit." The one with the tree and stocking is made out of rubber and are "velcroed" to the poster. The Barbaro Love Vigil is displayed on the bottom of both posters in the corners.

The poster was featured on the MSNBC Website with a feature article about Barbaro's recovery. You can read the article here:

Thank you Nicky, for making  it and sending it to New Bolton Center.

"The Old One" - A Beautiful Holiday Story

A brother and sister had made their usual hurried obligatory pre-Christmas visit to the little farm where dwelt their elderly grandparents with their small herd of horses. The farm was where they had grown up and had been named Lone Pine Farm because of the huge pine, which topped the hill behind the farm. Through the years the tree the tree had become a talisman to the old man and his wife, and a landmark in the countryside. The young siblings had fond memories of the childhood here but the city hustle and bustle added more excitement to their lives, and called them away to a different life.

The old folks no longer showed their horses, for the years had taken their toll, and getting out to the barn on those frosty mornings was getting harder but it gave them a reason to get up in the mornings and a reason to live. They sold a few foals each year, and the horses were their reason for joy in the morning and contentment at the day's end.

Angry, as they prepared to leave, the young couple confronted the old folks. "Why do you not at least dispose of 'The Old One." She is no longer of use to you. It's been years since you've had foals from her. You should cut corners and save so you can have more for yourselves. How can this old worn out horse bring you anything but expenses and work? Why do you keep her anyway?"

The old man looked down at his worn boots, holes in the toes, scuffed at the barn floor and replied, "Yes I could use a pair of new boots. His arm slid defensively about the Old One's neck as he drew her near with gentle caressing, he rubbed her softly behind her ears. He replied softly, "We keep her because of love. Nothing else, just love."

Baffled and irritated, the young folks wished the old man and his wife a Merry Christmas and headed back toward the city as darkness stole through the valley. The old couple shook their heads in sorrow that it had not been a happy visit. A tear fell down upon their cheeks. How is it that these young folks do not understand the peace of the love that that filled their hearts?

So it was, that because of the unhappy leave-taking, no one noticed the insulation smoldering on the frayed wires in the old bar. None saw the first spark fall. None but the "Old One".

In a matter of minutes, the whole barn was ablaze and the hungry flames were licking at the loft full of hay. With a cry of horror and despair, the old man shouted to his wife to call for help as he raced to the barn to save their beloved horses. But the flames were roaring now, and the blazing heat drove him back. He sank sobbing to the ground, helpless before the fire's fury. His wife back from calling for help cradled him in her arms, clinging to each other, they wept at their loss.

By the time the fire department arrived, only smoking, glowing ruins were left, and the old man and his wife, exhausted from their grief huddled together before the barn. They were speechless as they rose from the cold snow covered ground. They nodded thanks to the firemen as there was nothing anyone could do now. The old man turned to his wife, raising her white head upon his shoulders as his shaking old hands clumsily dried her tears with a frayed red bandana. Brokenly he whispered," We have lost much, but God has spared our home on the eve of Christmas. Let is gather strength and climb the hill to the old pine where we have sought comfort in times of despair. We will look down upon our home and give thanks to God that it has been spared and pray for our beloved most precious gifts that have been taken from us.

And so, he took her by the hand and slowly helped her up the snowy hill as he brushed aside his own tears with the back of his old and withered hand. The journey up the hill was hard for their old bodies in the steep snow. As they stepped over the little knoll at the crest of the hill, they paused to rest, looking up to the top of the hill the old couple gasped and fell to their knees in amazement at the incredible beauty before them. Seemingly, every glorious brilliant star in the heavens was caught up in the glittering snow-frosted branches of their beloved pine, and it was aglow with heavenly candles. And poised at its top most bough, a crystal crescent moon glistened like spun glass. Never had a mere mortal created a Christmas tree such as this. They were breathless as the old man held his wife tighter in his arms.

Suddenly, the old man gave a cry of wonder and incredible joy. Amazed and mystified, he took his wife by the hand and pulled her forward. There, beneath the tree, in resplendent glory, a mist hovering over and glowing in the darkness was their Christmas gift. Shadows glistening in the night light. Bedded down about the "Old One" close to the trunk of the tree, was the entire herd, safe.

At the first hint of smoke, she had pushed the door ajar with her muzzle and had led the horses through it. Slowly and with great dignity, never looking back, she had led them up the hill, stepping cautiously throughout the snow. The foals were frightened and dashed about. The skittish yearlings looked back at the crackling, hungry flames, and tucked their tails under then as they licked their lips and hopped like rabbits. The mares that were in foal with a new years crop of babies, pressed uneasily against the "Old One: as she moved calmly up the hill and to safety beneath the pine. And now, she lay among them and gazed at the faces of the old man and his wife. Those she loved she had not disappointed. Her body was brittle with years, tired from the climb, but the golden eyes were filled with devotion as she offered her gift- - -

Because of love...Only because of love!

Tears flowed as the old couple shouted their praise and joy, and again the peace of love filled their hearts.

Barbaro examined by podiatrist: News Release From New Bolton Center

December 20, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA-- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was examined yesterday by Dr. Scott Morrison, head of the equine podiatry service at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. “Barbaro is stable and comfortable although we remain concerned about the long term management of his left hind foot,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. According to Barbaro’s medical team, Dr. Morrison did some minor work on Barbaro’s left hind foot, and made recommendations concerning the management of that foot. “There is no timetable at this moment concerning Barbaro’s discharge from the hospital,” said Dr. Richardson. “His comfort on both hind limbs is good and his overall condition is excellent.”

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, January 2, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

A Cat's Christmas Prayer- So Touching!

Whoever made the stars that shine,
Whoever made green trees of pine,
Whoever dreamed up fish and mice,
Or sun and rain and snow and ice,
Must have the power in His paws
To help when there's a worthy cause.
Whoever gave the birds a nest
Will grant this humblcat's request.

For needy felines everywhere,
I meow my little Christmas prayer.
Please heal the sick
And cheer the sad,
Forgive the naughty,
and excuse the bad.

One more simple thing I ask:
A pool of sunlight in which to bask,
Plus a plate of food,
A safe, warm house,
A loving lap, a catnip mouse.
Freedom from fleas, furballs, and mats,
And homes for all the homeless cats.

Our Holiday Gift For Barbaro- Enjoy

We just wanted to share our Holiday gift for Barbaro- From The Barbaro Love Vigil group. The gang at New Bolton Center got a real kick out of it, and we are sure that Barbaro will have lots of fun taking these ornaments off, slowly..savoring the joy and the love sent to him by the group.

Rachel, of Kennett florists wrote us that the tree is actually taller and the picture does not really do it justice, but it is so unique that we wanted to display it!

Kentucky foot specialist Morrison to examine Barbaro on Tuesday,12/19

BARBARO

Patricia McQueen photo

Word spread like wildfire this week about Barbaro's imminent departure from the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center, however, no timetable has been set for the transfer of the injured Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (G1) winner. Gretchen Jackson said on Saturday that Scott E. Morrison, D.V.M., equine podiatry specialist at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, will on Tuesday examine Barbaro's laminitic left hind foot.

Barbaro is steadily regaining strength in his right hind limb, which he shattered in the opening stages of the Preakness Stakes (G1) on May 20, after his cast was removed on August 6 by Dean Richardson, D.V.M., chief surgeon at Penn's veterinary school.

The three-year-old Dynaformer colt, a homebred of Roy and Gretchen Jackson, developed life-threatening acute laminitis in his opposite left hind foot while recovering from the original injury. Doctors resectioned 80% of the hoof wall in July and, while the hoof is gradually growing back, the laminitic hoof remains a source of concern.

"I just think they are coming to a point where they can't do anything more for him [at New Bolton]," Gretchen Jackson said. "He's ready to move on is, more or less, what Dean is telling us. But we don't have any dates. I'm under strict orders, things are in the making, but I just can't say anything until it's all solidified.

"They are just thinking that maybe [Morrison] can help him out more," Jackson continued. "Even though it has grown, it will never look like a normal hoof, I've been told. But it's definitely grown, and he walks on it fine."

For now, Barbaro remains in the intensive care unit at the New Bolton Center's George D. Widener Hospital for large animals, where he underwent a five-hour surgery in which Richardson and the New Bolton staff stabilized the limb with a locking compression plate and 27 screws.

Barbaro's life was in grave danger when he developed laminitis in July, but Richardson believed he could control the pain and thus far Barbaro has made steady progress.

"I could kick myself today, because he's been just wonderful for the last month, very gentle. ...My grandkids were in his stall [Saturday] morning and I didn't have a camera," Gretchen Jackson said. "He's lying down and they were walking right up to his head and kissing him and everything. I would have loved to have a picture of it, and I just hope I get the opportunity again to have the kids in there with him at the same time he's lying down. He's shown such a nice side to his personality and such a sweet side going through this whole ordeal."—Mike Curry

New Bolton Center Update-Barbaro- 12/12/06 -Excellent!

Barbaro gaining strength on right hind leg

December 12, 2006

KENNETT SQUARE, PA-- Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is continuing to strengthen on his right hind leg since the cast was removed on November 6, according to his medical team. “Barbaro will need a special shoe on his right hind foot that will provide extra support for at least the next several months,” said Dr. Dean W. Richardson, Chief of Surgery. Barbaro’s medical team plans to change his right hind shoe within the next day or two.

Barbaro’s left hind foot, which had laminitis, continues to improve. “The left hind foot is progressing slowly although his comfort on that foot remains acceptable,” said Dr. Richardson. “Most importantly, Barbaro’s overall condition is continuing to improve and he weighs more now than at any time during his hospitalization.”

The next update will be posted on Tuesday, December 19, unless there is a significant change in Barbaro’s condition.

We Mourn The Loss Of HOST PETS Scamp- Rest In Heaven,Troy

A wonderfully compassionate  community leader, a former host in the Pet's community on AOL passed away yesterday, December 8th after a long battle with Cancer. He died peacefully.

Darrell Troy Skelton, his real name, (Earlofmanynames5) was beloved in the community in which he hosted. He assisted so many people as a host, and was dedicated to the members who attended his chats, as well as those who were active in the Dog Community. Always ready to assist, and with a great sense of humor, Troy was truly loved by the folks with whom he had contact.

Troy will be deeply missed by those who's lives he touched. Our prayers and condolences go out to his family at this time.

Rest peacefully, Troy. Speaking for many people I know, it was a pleasure to have known you and to have shared part of our lives with you through the Internet connection that brought us together with you.

Some messages sent me by people that knew Troy are posted below.

" I just wanted to inform you that Troy (Earlofmanynames5) also known to many when Aol had hosted chat rooms as Host Scamp left us today to go to heaven. I will advise you of any arrangements as soon as I get them. He was a great guy and will be sorely missed by many.  He spoke well of you and all his internet friends and missed talking with you during his current illness. Please let any one else you think should know. He fought a hard battle with the cancer and died peacefully.  He will be missed by all who knew him as he would go out of his way to help another chatter - he sure did help me out with a lot of things.

Troy, I know you wouldn't want us to cry but am crying now.  Thank you so very much for all you did for me.  You will never be forgotten.  REST IN PEACE !

Terry"

"Thank you so much for letting me know. I "worked" with Troy as a host. His personality could not be matched. He was loving, kind, caring, and dedicated. He shared other peoples pain, helping them any way possible. But most of all I think he will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor. I am sending glow to lead the way to heaven where he will be pain free, making his warm loving presence known. He will be missed by so many people in so many places!

"I cannot even begin to say how deep my grief goes on this loss of my long, long time buddy Troy. It has been many years since I first met Troy in the doggy chat room,   when i was just a greenie and didn't even know what ''lol'' was. We also have chatted for several years now on the phone, and he was as close to me as any member of my family. I will never forget his humor, nor that one night inchat when somebody mis-typed  my name as loin instead of lion. That was the start of a whole night of absolutely hysterical chat using the word loin. He was a gentle soul with a heart of gold, and I know how much he valued all of our friendships between us all. I am thankful that he left us knowing how much he was loved by his Aunt Linda and Uncle Richard, and of course by all of us,   his online family.

This was the best birthday present he could have,   to be able to let go and go peacefully into the arms of God. He is now at peace, not in pain, and I know watching over us from above. There will be a brighter star in the sky tonight, and as I light my candles tonight for Sabbath, I will ask God to light his way to him.
I will also be in Temple tonight and will stand and say  'Yiskor'  for him.
This is a special prayer when people have passed away.     I will do this with all of you in my heart. As much as my heart is breaking right now,   I am glad he no longer suffers.

Hugs,   Sandy"

"Troy will truly be missed. He was a sweet, kind man with not only a heart of gold, but a true sense of humor.
He always made me smile and I considered him to be a friend.

I will miss him forever.

Beth"
"I first met Troy in dog chat 10 years ago. Although he was a terrible typist at that time ;), it was clear that he was someone special. His witty one-liners and overall sense of humor, his empathy, and his love for animals (he also had a cat named Trixie), all made him loveable and endearing.

He always made me laugh -- sometimes his comments were so deliberately over the top, it was pure genius!  He also could be serious and his comfort during my times of sorrow was sincere and helpful  .

Siamnight and I had so much fun playing around with wavs, trying to convert them for Earl's MAC, and the Rocky Horror Picture Show sound bites especially tickled his fancy. We played like children on our new-found toys, our computers. We chased away trolls in chats, and teased one another.

I am glad we all had this time together, it was unique, and so was Earl. I will never forget him. My profound condolences to his family and friends.

Ingrid (welli2)"

"I, too, am deeply saddened.  The last email I had from Troy was Nov. 18.  Who knew it would be the last.  Heaven is a better place now.

"Welli, I met Earl about the same time. You, Earl and Siam took me in a private room and tried to teach me how to do the wavs. I'll never forget that. Earl and I laughed about it many times.

Earl was my best friend. The first time I found PCF, Earl was there and we became friends. That friendship grew over the years and he was family to me. I got the last e-mail from him on Nov. 20th. He wrote me quite a lot during the last month, more than usual. I prayed so hard that a miracle would happen but like someone said, Heaven is a better place tonight. I will always miss him. AOL just lost a lot of its shine, and they don't even know it.

God bless you, Earl. Take care of the furbabies until we get there.

Love,
Bette"

For The Holiday Season- A Touching Story.

A friend sent this to me and I just had to share it here. It does show that there are some really compassionate and loving people in our troubled world. I hope that you will find this little piece as sweet as I did.

"Some of you may know that our 14 year old dog, Abbey, died last month (8/23). The day after she died, my 4 year old daughter Meredith was crying and talking about how much she missed Abbey. She asked if we could write a letter to God so that when Abbey got to heaven, God would recognize her. She dictated and I wrote:

"Dear God,
Will you please take special care of our dog, Abbey? She died yesterday and is heaven. We miss her very much. We are happy that you let us have her as our dog even though she got sick. I hope that you will play with her. She likes to play with balls and swim before she got sick. I am sending some pictures of her so that when you see her in heaven you will know she is our special dog. But I really do miss her.
Love,
Meredith Claire
ps: Mommy wrote the words after Mer told them to her"

We put that in an envelope with 2 pictures of Abbey, and addressed it to God/Heaven. We put our return address on it. Then Mer stuck some stamps on the front (because, as she said, it may take lots of stamps to get a letter all the way to heaven) and that afternoon I let her drop it into the letter box at the post office.

For a few days, she would ask if God had gotten the letter yet. I told her that I thought He had. Yesterday, for Labor Day, we took the kids to Austin to a natural history museum. When we got back, there was a package wrapped in gold paper on our front porch. Curious, I went to look at it. It had a gold star card on the front and said "To: Mer" in an unfamiliar hand.

Meredith took it in and opened it. Inside was a book by Mr. Rogers, When a Pet Dies. Taped to the inside front cover was the letter we had written to God, in its opened envelope (which was marked Return to Sender: Insufficient address). On the opposite page, one of the pictures of Abbey was taped under the words "For Meredith." We turned to the back cover, and there was the other picture of Abbey, and this handwritten note on pink paper:

"Dear Mer,
I know that you will be happy to know that Abbey arrived safely and soundly in Heaven! Having the pictures you sent to me was such a big help. I recognized Abbey right away.

You know, Meredith, she isn't sick anymore. Her spirit is here with me--just like she stays in your heart--young and running and playing. Abbey loved being your dog, you know. Since we don't need our bodies in heaven, I don't have any pockets!-- so I can't keep your beautiful letter. I am sending it to you with the pictures so that you will have this book to keep and remember Abbey.

One of my angels is taking care of this for me. I hope the little book helps.

Thank you for the beautiful letter. Thank your mother for sending it. What a wonderful mother you have! I picked her especially for you.

I send my blessings every day and remember that I love you very much. By the way, I am in heaven and wherever there is love.

Love,
God, and the special angel who wrote this after God told her the words."

As a parent and a pet lover, this is one of the kindest things that I've ever experienced. I have no way to know who sent it, but there is some very kind soul working in the dead letter office.  Just wanted to share this act of compassion :-)
